Hi there,

I'm new to the forum but hoped to get some advice on how to properly store my vintage star wars collection.

I have a lot of boxed items at my parents house, but they are reclaiming my old bedroom and I'll have to move the items into my loft. Any advice on how to store the boxes and carded figures to protect from damp, mice, temperature dangers?

Any tips, advice or stories from learning the hard way appreciated!

Thanks

Jon

You can store them at my house if you want, I have a lovely empty garage ready to house them :D

Had the same thought myself. Any advice on this would be great, especially lofts can have damp, condensation and heat issues around the seasons.

If the room your collection is going to be in has any damp or condensation issues then you will be best investing in a dehumidifier, you can get these from ebay for a tenner, just a plastic box with a chemical sachet that sits inside and pulls all the moisture out of the air (you change those periodically)

One of the most important things is to not house your collection in a room with fluctuating temperatures, luckily the UK climate is quite good for maintaining a constant temperature all year round but for places like lofts that do heat up and get cold quicker than other rooms in your house you may want to install something to control the temp.

Never seal anything too tightly, this goes for plastic tubs, boxes etc, your friend is air and collectibles need a bit of air to breath and o let off their own Vintage scent into the atmosphere.

Last tip...more for displaying than storing but..hanging pictures on walls - Never hang a picture on an outside wall because outside walls suffer the worst in your house from temperature change, an outside wall can get incredibly cold in the winter and then hot again in the summer- not good! Make sure to hang pictures/posters or whatever else on an inside wall if possible.

That's just the info I was after, thanks.

So perhaps the garage is more suitable than he loft?

Thanks again

My garage would be the smart choice yes ;)

On a more serious note..yes - well..do a bit of research first, stick a thermometer in your garage and check it at various times of the day and during different weather conditions. If your garage is attached to your house it would be best to keep anything stored in there closer to the wall that joins the house and not the outside wall.

Ideally you want a constant temperature only shifting by a few degrees if possible, the cold isn't a problem IMO, it's heat that can do damage, obviously freezing toys wont be good for them but they are pretty resilient and will be fine with low temps.

i use locktight storage boxes, they are just a big version of those food boxes you get from tesco ect.

but nothing will totally protect them from temperature fluctuation, make sure you have proper loft insulation, airtight lock boxes and good padded protection and they should be ok.

if you store them in cardboard or crap plastic continers, you will get warping and condition deterioration.
