I have smoked like chimney for years around my collection and have bought toys from many people who have smoked. Check the new RS debate

http://forum.rebelscum.com/t1093761/

I smoke and to suggest I can not smell smoke on items is dumb at best. Anyways most yellowing on toys that people assume is nicotine residue, I find to be from "Kenner Yellowing" due to aging plastic. I hope I never sell to anyone this anal as to sniff their toys. Thoughts?

I have bought toys that have that "Old" smell.....but that smell is like toy crack to me.

Yellowing on white plastic is due to the colours used to make white coming to the surface - mainly attracted to sunlight. I was told by a UPVC manufacturer that modern plastic and made from previously recycled white plastic only to keep the whiteness lasting longer.

I can feel my airways tightening as I read lol

I gotta say even if it is obvious, if you smoke in your house and near your collection it is going to reek like these lovely ladies breath..

Once bought a mailer and some baggies from a smoker, took me 3 weeks using a storage tub and vanilla essence to get rid of the smell, it smelt like satan had been smoking human cigars near it for eternity.

I hate smoke and yes smoke does get into just about everything, if it causes yellowing? I don't know but the smell is bad enough for me!

I have to agree I can't stand the smell of smoke on things. I used to smoke occasionally but just couldn't stand the stale cigarette smell, stale joint smoke however..... :D

Indeed, but those figures are damn hard to light.

I no longer smoke indoors since the arrival of my daughter but I used smoke like a loony with my loose ships on the bookcase - never gonna sell them and they're a bit beat up so... meh, what business is it to anyone what I do in my own home with my own stuff? The unmistakable aroma of opening my figure cabinet is my second favourite smell, after that of a freshly opened pack of Craven 'A' cigarettes. Gasping for a smoke now... off to the garden...

I'm a smoker ( but never inside ). I thought the comment was a bit anal hence my toilet comment.
I remember seeing a pic of yours with an ashtray inside the house. I must admit since you have kids smoke outside fella

I do not blow smoke at my collection and I have never sold anything that "Reeks"...being some of these toys are decades old and have changed hands numerous times...the never smoked around thing it kinda funny to me. I stopped smoking once for about 6 months and no signs of a wretched smell on the collection whatsoever. I just though the first comment in the thread from the one dude saying if you smoke you have no reason to be collecting was kinda an asshole move. Good thing I am banned. :D

I am a part time smoker  I don't think smoking does my figures any good, good thing they are all bagged up :D

Its not as black and white as the statement on RS though, some people smoke in their homes and you would never know it when you visit them, others you can smell it before the front door is opened.

I have been thinking of ending the listing on my next eBay auction with 'Comes from a home where the pets smoke' but after reading the RS thread it might mot be as funny as I thought.

Not trying to be rude with this Todd as I have lived with smokers and my wife smoked for a long time too, I have nothing against anyone who smokes or anyone that smokes and collects but unless you take yourself out of the home you smoke in for a long period of time you won't notice the smell. You said yourself you have been puffing away quite happily for years in your home, it's just something you won't notice.

A non smoker walking into a smokers house on the other hand will pick up on the smell almost immediately as the smell is in the carpet, the furniture, the clothes, the curtains..everywhere.

As for the RS thread and the comments..personally the only problem I would have is if someone sold me something and didn't tell me (or make it known in their auction) that they smoked. Simply because it is unfair and a bit of a shock to open something up and have it smell so bad you have to either bin it or try to combat the smell, it's actually rather embarrassing too especially if you buy from someone you know (forum friend etc) - I never knew how to even approach the subject when I bought those figures from a forum buddy so I tried my best to do something about the smell and even so I had to chuck the mailer box + catalogue away as they still stank of cigar smoke or something..made me want to vomit.

This is a tough one - I get Todd's point, and agree that some of the RS comments are a bit anal.

In my opinion, it is your health, your life and your collection and you should be able to smoke whatever you like around it

However, this issue comes does become a problem when you want to sell items. I have bought collections in the past that have come in stinking of smoke - this has meant that at best I have had to air then for a month or so before I could resell and in other cases I have just put them away in the garage and hope that the smell will decrease over time

Got to add this quickly, a bigger concern for me is my collection smelling of spicy food!!!

There are new tenants in the flat below me, they do like a bit of spicy cooking, the trouble is the smell seems to leak into the bulging cupboard where my VSW is kept, when I open the door I get a nice aroma of cardboard, plastic and all-spice

Definite grounds for an eviction notice I think

I've bought a lot from a smoker that absolutely stank. The boxes and figures had a bit of yellowing, but it is hard to say for certain that it wasn't just due to ageing.

Smokers don't seem to notice the smell, whereas non-smokers can smell it a mile away.

I do sniff my toys: it's part of verifying their origin as PBP. :p

I just want to jump in and say that I have given up smoking for 26 days. I haven't got much to add to the discussion, just quite chuffed with myself really.

Vaping, my friends, is the new smoking. The vaping devices look like cool little lightsabres!

There I brought it back to Star Wars

:)

Well done Jamie.

I do not take any of it personally........and I have smelled thjngs from a chain smoker that reaked. I am just saying thta I think some people take this to the extreme. Used items and old items may have smells that do not agree with some. Be forwarned....anything I trade and sell comes from a smokers home. I wonder if any of my customs had a fowl stench?

On a side note.....do not bin the stinky boxes and figures...I will take them off your hands for free.

I've bought stuff before in the past which reeked, had to leave stuff out on the balcony to try and get rid of it - febreeze helps as well!

Why do I get the feeling Todd's going to get his RS ban extended?

Nah.....I will stay out of that discussion. It's all non-smokers pushing their beliefs. I have sold hundreds of toys on Ebay and have never had a complaint...so I am sure my toys set happily in some non-smoking collections. I think if smelly toys is your hang up in life, maybe you should ask a seller before you bid, not the seller having to say "Hey you know I smoke, drink and fry fish in my home...so be advised" Smoking is a bad habit, it does make some items in your home smell. Unless I am blowing smoke 24 hours day directly into the toys or using the AT-AT's head as an ash tray...I think my toys are all good.

I do understand many of the points raised...I just think the OP in the RS thread is a doushebag.

I think for a lot of the vintage stuff that does actually stink of tabs comes from households where the parents smoked like chimneys back in the day - so if you think about it, it could be upwards of five years of figures exposed to a fug of smoke so that's why they stink.

I used to smoke back in my student days and none of the books I had in my room now stink of smoke, so I think it is all down to the amount of smoke and how long something is exposed to it.
