Theres a few choice pieces i would like.

I sell some bits to fund them for if and when they come up so i have funds available.

And well i end up buying other vintage stuff instead that pop up here and there

Ahhhhhhhh the curse and joy of the hobby

It's so hard staying on target some times especially as you get to the end of a run. It's a tough one if a bargain comes along you buy it and then a week later the item you've been waiting months for comes along and you don't have the funds.

I set limits as I don't want to be partly responsible for adding to the increase in prices. There are not many pieces I want, so I don't want to buy them all in 6 months and have nothing else to hunt for for the next 10-20 years.

I have the same problem

I heard your thinking about collecting vintage 12 inch dolls now Lars, LMK if you do we can have a chat about them :D

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo don't believe what hear

I've been really bad at sticking to a target, although I'm kind of settling down. Its looking at those LA threads that does it, so many cool items out there.

One of the reasons I joined this forum, to gain knowledge and stop buying anything and everything Star Wars  having a very limited budget helps ground you though

Yeah, I find I keep getting distracted too. I'm still on with completing my loose first 79 collection, which is going well. However...

I was thinking of going down the 12" route. I bought a really nice boxed Kenner R2 because I had one as a kid, and I think the 12" line is great. I also recently bought a die-cast TIE Fighter MOC (again, had one as a kid) and I think I might have the die-cast bug! Even then I can't decide whether I'd like to put together a run of the complete 12" or die-cast line, or focus on the TIE or R2 and go for examples from different manufacturers. :?

I suppose the one focus I do have is 'stuff I had as a kid'. But then again, I never had a Palitoy Death Star and I've been looking for one for a while now...!

Contrary to what a lot of people think, you don't need to focus! It's amazing to be free of the 'focus' sometimes and just buying things you like - 12", moc, loose, comics, jigsaws, clarks shoes - whatever you see, can afford, and like!

There is a really strong 'pull' in this hobby towards creating a tightly focussed 'run' which demonstrates 'completing' a small part of collecting - I'm a sucker for this as many are, but if you aren't minded to complete a 'run' then don't - just buy what you like and enjoy the freedom!

Well said Max! Sometimes collectors forget about the fun this hobby should bring and it all gets too serious what with big money involved etc etc :!:

Most of us go for focuses but there r so many cool pieces out there and if u love em then why not go for em :)

You're absolutely right, and my first focus has already proved to be 'stuff I like'. :) The temptation there is to buy too much too soon, but I've managed to restrict myself and haven't been using credit cards/loans etc... I do think a focus can look really cool though, particularly if it's an item which has some special meaning. That's why I find the thought of a die-cast TIE or 12" R2 run really appealing - they're both toys I had a real affinity for as a kid. I also think they both look really good in their original packaging.

When I was collecting (non-SW stuff) in the late 80s/early 90s I had a habit of wanting to get everything. This quickly becomes impractical (and in SW collecting these days unaffordable) so I think a suitable focus can help with space and finances too.
