Starting out as a collector

I've had good experiences on ebay, but in most cases they are swfuk members.

Sound advice from all above. The only advice I would give is start with a not to hard focus. So you achieve something early on and gives you a sense of accomplishment Something like last 17 loose or a carector loose focus like Luke or Han Solo :D may the force be with you

Well, I'm off and running,

Decided to go loose, Vintage and POTF. Iain sold me Lando in Skiff disguise and Logray, lovely figures. Weequay and Bossk on the way to join them. Whatever happens, Lando and Logray will hold a special place in my collection!

Couple more questions guys: 1) Does COO matter? I'm veering away from stuff with no COO. 2). What exactly are the last 17? POTF figures?

I had a hunt round Norwich, checked out Toyz and Gamez on Reepham Road (you may know of it Iain). Had a few bits loose and incomplete, of interest perhaps was a Dewback with Trooper boxed for 20 quid. Seemed Ok but didn't know enough to make an offer. Plenty of modern stuff going cheap, but imagine the likes of Mace Windu are pretty common figures carded. Other than that, not much doing.

Cheers,
Jim

COO doesn't matter in my eyes

Last 17

A Wing Pilot
Barada
Luke Stormtrooper
Yak Face
Imperial Gunner
Imperial Dignitary
R2-D2 Pop up Lightsaber
Han Solo Carbonite
Luke Skywalker Combat Poncho
Anakin Skywalker
Land Calrissian (General Pilot)
EV9D9
Amanaman
Lumat
Warok

Some will be expensive to buy - Yak Face, Luke Stormie, EV9D9, Amanaman, R2-D2 Lightsaber

The rest fairly affordable.

Awing Pilot with an original blaster can also be a real toughie to find :)

Liam makes a good point about the A Wing Pilot, which also applies to a few others.

A Wing Pilot and Imperial Gunner haveBLACK Endor blaster's, not blue, not dark blue but BLACK

Luke Stormtrooper has a BLACK Imperial Blaster
Lando General Pilot has a BLACK Palace Blaster

So anyone trying to sell you one of these figures with any different colour than black ain't selling you the right weapon for the figure whether it's genuine or repro.

The excellent, spot on advice is coming thick and fast, and it sounds like you're learning fast.
Every one has mentioned it, you've acknowledged it, time my friend, take your time.

Welcome to the best collecting forum there is :)

Excellent couple of hours at the Norwich Sci Fi event at UEA this morning. Glad I waited after seeing all sorts come up on various forums and Ebay that had me sorely tempted. Picked up a couple of bargains, the first being a B-Wing fighter with pilot. All looks in good condition, no laser sounds unfortunately but a lovely piece and lets face it a real crowd pleaser. I then met Iain, who sold me an (almost) complete Ewok Village and 3 Figures: Black Bespin Guard, Squid Head and Klaatu. The collection grows. Good to meet, briefly, a few forumites too.
Real buying buzz today!

Cheers,
Jim.

don't be completely scared from ebay. This is what I do,,,

I'm assembling loose:
i select a couple of targets in mind, then I research the weapons, any variations that might push an auction way over my price.Or if its weapon-less I ensure I can readily get hold of a genuine weapon.

If i find an auction that looks okay I then check the seller out and look at their history and any negs. Negs don't put me off, it just gives an insight into previous deals. I know how easy some buyers give negs so I might look at the buyers and their records too. Sounds a lot of work, but its only a few clicks and you can quickly start to build a picture.
If that checks out, then I do a quick search on here for the username. If nothing here, I might just google the name to see if there's been any issues.

Other things before bidding are the overall ebay page, has the description got any further info, this is where a lot of sellers mention whether the item being genuine or repro. If they haven't mentioned it in the title, that annoys me and automatically I'm suspicious. If its authenticity isn't stated then unless the previous criteria I've mentioned aren't satisfactory to me, I just leave it alone, or watch it and see if others are going for it (my repro spotting abilities are still weak so it could be obviously genuine).

I know this sounds like a lot of stuff, but in the long term these little flags are worth waving before parting with hard earned cashage.

Hi Jim, do what you most enjoy collecting. When I started to collect I wanted one of each figure as a loose and all the vehicles, playsets and beasts with a box. Later it changed and I wanted a lot more

Good luck with the hunt

Afternoon all,

after the thread got a mention on episode 2 of the podcast (cheers guys!) I thought I would offer something of an update, over a month into collecting.

Some superb advice has been offered on this thread, and 2 things in particular stand out for me.
1) Everything comes round for sale again, take your time.
Having followed the sales thread here and of course Ebay, this has proven to be true for me. OK, AFA graded 12 backs don't appear very often but in terms of loose figures and even the rarer playsets, stuff pops up all of the time. Searching for completed Ebay listings is a useful way of acquainting yourself with the going rates and I always do this when coming across an item I am less familiar with.

One thing that is fascinating is the Yak Face hype train. I see more Yaks on Ebay than I do Lando Generals and Imperial Gunners. I'll put it out there- I am dreading buying a Yak Face, or a Blue Snag for that matter!

2) Pick a focus.
I began by purchasing loose (always complete if possible, saves money in the long run) figures that I liked. Favourites from the films, some less likely ones that translate nicely into an action figure. I even picked up a couple of vehicles, a B-Wing and an AT-ST from a carboot. However, I decided that this scatter-gun approach could not last nor be sustainable. It was suggested on the podcast that I could start with the last 17, and get them out of the way! This does make sense, and having missed a Barada on the forum I wouldn't say no to him or equivalent. But, I have just paid the final bill for my wedding in August (denied Imperial March as an entrance song at dinner by wife to be) and for now a last 17 focus is just not practical. I have therefore gone for a first 12 focus. So far I have Ben, Vader, Stormie, Jawa (no weapon) and DSC.
In the future, I would consider a Cantina aliens focus or perhaps a Bounty Hunter variants focus. I do like Walrusman, and it seems like there are a few variants available and I could even collect the modern versions too and display side by side (sacrilege).

So, that's roughly where I am right now. 24 Figures standing on display just above where I sit and type, bug truly caught.

A few newbie questions before I finish.
Why are Lili Ledy so expensive?
Same question for POCH and PBP figures. What's the deal here?
If I find Toy Toni, should I kill him or collect the bounty from the forum?

Finally, thanks again to all who have offered advice and to all whom I have dealt with so far on the forum.
