Never read any before, so where do I start? What's considered the series that is a 'must read'?

Neil (Jackabina) is probably your man - think he has a lot of the books for sale as well

Hey dude,

I have been reading through them over past few months. You can get a list of books from internet and go through chronologically. Most of them are OK. The ones I enjoyed were the Darth Bane series by Drew Karpyshyn with path of destruction very good and the others less so. Also Darth Plagueis by James Luceno. They are all about Sith before ANH.

Also the Thrawn Triology by timothy zahn set in new republic era was really good and my starting point

I also really enjoyed the han solo adventures by Brian Daley.

I bought some books really cheaply on eBay (about 99p each when motivated or paid a bit more for the kindle editions.

Hope this of some help. :D

You have 2 options. Chronological order starting with golden age of the sith, or release order starting with heir to the empire trilogy. I've around 300 novels, tpb etc and still a way to go

Hmm yeah can't decide which way to go with it. Do they all connect, I mean do they mention characters from other novels in other series are are most written in isolation? I presume they are all checked and licenced by lucas arts so add the whole thing? I can't see me reading them all to be honest so I might just read some from different eras. Dunno :D

Yes they all connect, although Luke etc wont be mentioned in novels set hundreds of years before the prequels etc!
Personally I'd start with Star Wars, then splinter of the minds eye
(Which was written before esb so is a bit odd) esb, shadows of the empire, rotj, truce at bakura, thrawn trilogy, then continue to the fare of the Jedi series. Then go back to old republic, leaving prequels and clone wars last.

Actually scrub that they don't all 'connect' in the way you need to read each book or series. If it is mainly the hero characters then start with thrawn trilogy, then do dark empire, Jedi academy and skip all books upto hand of thrawn duology, then vector prime. Not saying that the skipped books are bad, some are such as black fleet crisis, but they are standalones and often don't move the story on or focus on characters such as wedge. The xwing books are a fun and great read but don't add to the overall journey of the main characters

Ok cool I'll follow that advice, thanks for taking the time. Another thing to trawl eBay for! :)
