For my book, I'd be interested in hearing about people's memories of saving and sending off the names from the Star Wars card backs.

As I child I opened the bubbles of my Star Wars figures very carefully with a pair of scissors. Even the packaging was like gold-dust to me. I still have some today in pretty good shape (although some got accidentally crushed).

To send off for the free figures and Bounty Hunter items, I asked around at school if I could have any unused card backs. In those pre-internet days, most kids I spoke to hadn't heard about the offer. I must have got dozens. I wonder what those kids thought if they ever did find out!

As I mentioned in your other thread I was the only person who collected Star Wars and bought figures in my year at school so I had to cut the nameplates out. I never thought about the damage to the cardback as it was more of an excitement knowing that I was getting a new star wars figure or accessory for free!
I still have all my original cardbacks and you can see chronologically how the free gifts were acquired. It's only the later Jedi and last 17 cardbacks which have their nameplates still attached.
If i can be bothered i should be able to sit down and work out which of my figures came from the offers and tally that against the missing nameplates :)
