Hello,
I'm new to collecting and looking to focus mainly on vintage loose figures and vehicles.
Are there any threads/links that can give me the basics as to what to look for when buying etc.
Any help or suggestions (little or small) would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks James

Hi mate, welcome aboard the boards :)

My advice would be buy the best you can afford and buy complete. You've come into the hobby at a time when you'll probably pay top $ for certain items but don't rush it.

Try and get the basic loose set done first, the sales thread here is a great indication of the true value of most vintage items, and there are some very trusted sellers here too. You're best bet would be to start here.

Don't be afraid to ask, there is no such thing as a silly question if you don't know the answer, most (if not all) of the boys will be happy to help.

The most important thing is to enjoy collecting :)

Hi James and welcome to the forum, their will be loads of valuable advice given to you on this thread I'm sure. So I'm gonna keep it short.

Don't spend more than £100 on a Yak Face.

Good luck with your collecting mate.

Thanks guys....... I have much to learn, looking at the threads. Plenty of good reading ahead of me......

Above all enjoy it. If that's not part of it then there's no point doing it.

Start small, don't rush and learn as much as you can through reading threads and asking loads of questions. That's a large part of the enjoyment and this is a great community from which to learn.

Some of us even know something about star wars!! :D :D

If your ever unsure on anything, prices, fakes, condition, sellers to avoid - always ask around here first! And as sith-smith said - Enjoy it, and don't rush it...

Pointers?

Stay away from a dodgy bloke called Weasel..he'll lead you down the garden path!

(Luckily you'll spot him a mile off with all that make up)

Welcome James. I concur with the others. Try and stay away from Ebay and Facebook. There is a huge amount of repro weapons around.Stick to the forums as much as you can.

Most of all Enjoy! :)

Cut cards are carded figures that have been cut up leaving just the sealed figure. There are a variety of different reasons why they came to end up that way, most common reason is that they were cut by parents to fit in shoe boxes etc (can fit more in one single box that way!) but apparently some US Kenner stuff was cut up and sold in the employees store (most likely to avoid it being resold) There is always one or two knocking around, here is one: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Star-Wars-Vintage-Walrus-Man-Cut-Card-Palitoy-/181685190022?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item2a4d47fd86

Beater card just means it's low grade, damaged etc.

If your next question is: Are beaters and cut cards ok to open then I would have to say NO

To be clear on the whole 'opening' thing...

In order to get a mint loose figure, many collectors over the years have opened sealed figure. This is seen as a terrible thing from the point of view of many collectors...if not the majority...as even a cut/beater card is a piece of Star wars history which, once opened, ceases to exist.

As you collect you will discover a whole range of issues involved with collecting!

Yeah, I intentionally left that out and all the potential fakes, repros, cons and all!! :?

All good reasons why being on a forum and asking loads of questions is a good thing!! 8)

I'd say play it safe at first - focusing on a nice loose first 12 set, move on to collecting the first 21 figures, etc., etc... Once you have more knowledge and understanding of things like MOC's (Mint on card), MISB (Mint in sealed box), MIB (Mint in box), that's when you spread your wings and go for it!

I advise collecting Action Force. Much less of a minefield and cheap...

Drunk Grant was right - I do have an anti-social attitude to Star Wars collecting :? ****!
