Some backs seem rarer than others...

I'm guessing that by even having to ask, I'm answering my own question in a way.. I know there are some extremes out there, where the belief is that there may be only one or two in existence etc. those do seem fairly well documented, its the level (or two) down though that I'm wondering about...

Are some of the Kenner card backs much rarer than others in MOC form? I'm looking at my Han Solo run and my Rebel Soldier (Hoth) runs and the numeric gaps that are left to fill (without getting into alpha) are as follows:

Rebel Soldier
32, 45, 48, 65, 79

Han Solo
32,47,48,77,79

It's fairly apparant at just a glance that there is an overlap of three cardback numbers: 32, 48, 79, so are these three particularly difficult to get? Is it just these two figures? Are these difficult in all figure MOCs?

or am I just not looking in the right places for them?

Good question I would say it's the figures your after. The 79 backs seem to be common, but can't say I remember seeing those two figures on a 79 back.

When I search for specific card backs I often find ones that aren't listed correctly or the back is not stated at all which doesn't help.

The 65 backs should be easy to get hold of though. :?

Nice link, according to that list Han Solo exists and Rebel Soldier is unconfirmed.

Yes certainly. There are so many figure / cardback variations out there, I don't think people are generally aware until they start looking for something or try to complete a run.

Suppose one of the most well known is the ESB 21 back Stormtrooper.

I started to collect the ESB 47 backs years ago but stopped once I found out 1 Zuckuss had been discovered & to complete the set, I'd have to somehow buy that exact one!

Been working on the ROTJ 48 run for a while and there a several characters which are extremely scarce. Have only seen one Luke X-wing for sale in about 5 years of looking. Yoda & Ben also very rare.

Keeps it interesting

Pretty certain I'm right in saying that Han Solo was never released on a Kenner 48bk, either a,b or c variation. I've certainly never seen one.

I wouldn't worry about hunting down any particular rare card back , if one comes along great but if it doesn't life rolls on , you'd be surprised what rare card backs come your way when your not even looking , I recently picked up a hammerhead offer less 20b as well as a sand people on a 31b without even looking and both are few and far between , don't look and they might show up .

You kind of have to approach things that way don't you because there's no definitive list anywhere of what actually exists and what doesn't. The Kellerman matrices say 'probably exists' in lots of places and there are RS threads identifying newly found cardbacks so the starting point is already muddled up. I found one of my MOCs wasn't in the matrix ages ago and I only had about 10 at the time.

Out of curiosity which card did you have ten of?

It's amazing I passed an English exam! Sorry, I meant i had 10 different MOCs and one wasn't in the matrix. Can't remember which it was, but it wasn't anything special.

Hi all,

A topic very close to my heart! I've always been interested in the relative scarcity of cardback variations, and is something that I was hoping Star Wars Tracker would eventually be able to answer comprehensively. I was also curious if it would be able to substantiate the Kellerman matrices over time that were left as question marks in the book.

SWT has almost 3 years of MOC auction data categorized down to the cardback level to make these sorts of questions easier to answer. Here's some data on Han (large head) but just going back six months.

There are certainly 32s and 77s around, and they don't seem particularly more scarce than others. But this is a global search that includes graded items, so if you narrow to just the UK it may be a different story, and if you increased the timeline out for several years perhaps a different story emerges too ... depends on how you refine your question really!

Cheers, Jared.
