So...what's the story behind the VCJ?

I'm no collector, I dig the aesthetic and the nostalgia, but my wife would kill me if I started splashing the cash on vintage SW stuff. (Although I do keep looking at cardbacks on eBay - surely a few quid here and there would be fine?)

But I do read a lot on the forum about various bits and pieces, and I'm trying to get more involved.

So - what's the deal with the VCJ? Why were they changed for the cloth? How rare are they? What's the story?

I believe they were only available on a 12 back card but the cloth one was also available on a 12 back so they must have been changed during that run, not sure at exactly what point, someone will know. Why? Probably just a design change because they thought the cloth one looked better or more accurate. They are quite rare in comparison to most of the other figures hence the high prices. This has some info:

Yeah Kenner thought the VC looked to cheap so changed it to a ritcher looking cloth one. Should have done it for OB1 and Vader as well, then we would have another two 12 backs to collect.

So I understand, it is because the jawa is smaller than the other first 12 action figures (r2 d2 aside). It was thought that because the jawa was small people would not buy the figure, so he needed some kind of hook. What they came up with was the luxurious cloth cape. So what he lacked in size, he made up for in accessories. Thats why the other full size figures got left with the shitty vinyl.

They are rare per say. There are loads of them out there, but they are far less common than 99% of the other production figures (please be gentle, variant collectors ;) ). There are lots of other items out there far rarer, but taking a broad overview of the figure line at the most basic level, these, Dt Luke's and blue snags are the rarest mass sold production figures.

4 loms cape reminds me of the seats in my mums old skoda.

great replys guys, btw the toltoys vcjawa is very rare compared to the kenner . he standard kenner is quite rare but hes nothing compared to the toltoys version

I reckon 4LOM must have been sweating in the Star Destroyer in that plastic coat but didn't want to take it off for fear of the others seeing that he was wearing a woman's leisure suit underneath it .

4lom is an interesting character. That suit allows him to survive outside of his home planets environment I believe. If memory serves he is also partners in crime with Zuckuss.

Also 4 LOM is actually Zuckuss and Zuckuss is actually 4 LOM :!:

Yeh Aussie VCJ is easy to tell apart from the U.S. example, the cape is a diff colour and the figure usually shows signs of some sort of plastic decay having blue/green spots on the body.

Yeah, Kenner got the pictures the wrong way around. All the modern ones are correct with Zuckuss being the Gand and 4-LOM the Droid.

It makes sense as 4LOM sounds like a droid's name and Zuckuss sounds like an alien who'd wear a dirty mac.

4-LOM stands for FOR LOVE OF MONEY, something the studio came up with to reference the trailer loads of money Lucasfilm were making from the licensing.

And even though this name switch has been explained and makes sense, I will always refer the them as they were originally titled, the droid is Zuckuss and the alien is 4-LOM.

Yep, always have and always will. Are there other hidden meanings in the names? That 4lom thing is mental!
