I've been using Goofbid for the last few years, but recently it has become very unreliable, only sniping about 50% of the time over the last 10 or so items I've tried to bid on, reported as failed login.

Is there another more reliable site people are using these days, or have eBay just made it more difficult? Bloody annoying, is always the items I really want

I don't use them personally, I'm almost always around to stick a bid on but my friend uses this a lot:

http://auctionsniper.com/

I was using Goofbid very successfully (for about 2 months) but it did the same "failed login thing" for me couple of times and I have not used it since. Very unreliable now.

Old fashioned finger on the trigger is the best.

that's what I use - costs a few pence for a successful snip from memory but very reliable

whats the lag between bidding and auction end?

I used to use snipestation - free but failed a lot and only 10 secs lag

snipeswipe, free to use (limited amount of credits per month) or you can subscribe

It's pretty quick. I have it set to 4 seconds and it hasn't failed me yet.
Not sure what happens further South of that. The default delay is 13 seconds. You can also configure your own default delay.

I set mine to 2 secs, seems to work ok for me ;)
