I have a factory sample of the ESB die-cast version of Slave 1. The thing that interests me is that on the reverse of the card there is a factory applied sticker (see image below). Have any collectors encountered this before or have any info?

WOW, great piece!
Is there a good story to share, about how you got this item?
(I don't mean a story like "yeah, I bought it on ebay", but more like, "I hunted this down from a previous Palitoy engineer, who also happened to be my nieces cousin.." :p

Kevin's story can be found here: http://trilogo.info/features/general-mills-factory-samples/ (he also posted some info in the limelight section too :D)

As for the Slave 1 - really not sure on that one Kevin, there are a few die cast lovers here though (Andy? Grant?) who may be able to help!

Yep, great piece.

I have a Palitoy Taun Taun in a 1st issue box that has little Palitoy logo stickers over the original Kenner ones. It's not a protoype piece, just a standard Kenner box. I think what must have happened is Palitoy bought in the 1st shipment of Taun Tauns then had some staff manually put the stickers over the Kenner logos.

great piece, and one I've not seen before. Looks like an early issue back with a typo or misprint - it might be along the lines of the 'Leichester' typo that has only recently been outed. The big question is what is under the sticker.....

the standard Slave 1 back is here - same text as the sticker

I always suspected that the three colour ESB back was an earlier issue than the all blue back below - the sticker would seem to prove that.

edit: or maybe not as the 1st issue ESB is also Y-Wing TM (as are the SW issues)

and for completeness - 1st issue ESB with no Slave 1, but still with the same Y-Wing TM text

Thanks for the information, much appreciated.

The sticker is clear so the background can be seen through it. Looks like there was no printing in that place on the card back.

In case you didn't see Kevin, spoons found an example of a shop sold Snowspeeder card with the transparent Y-Wing sticker:

Kenner sometimes used stickers to add or replace text as a cheaper alternative to editing the existing card. Perhaps this one was just a way of easily correcting already printed cards that were missing the text.

I noticed a similar thing on the Jabbas Dungeon box:

Original text (on the cromalin):

& the sticker Kenner used to cover it (with the new text):

So, I guess even though it is on a sample it's probably not that important, just one of those things that nobody ever noticed before or documented.

Thanks Joe for posting the pic. I trawled eBay when Spoons mentioned it but couldn't find it. Does look like they forgot the text originally and stuck stickers over to amend. Cool spot on the Jabba's Dungeon error.

Hi Kevin,

Here is the auction Spoons found: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-1980-Star-Wars-ESB-Die-Cast-Rebel-Armored-Snowspeeder-Cardback-/371202479270?pt=US_Action_Figures&hash=item566d6454a6&nma=true&si=fkuG%252F3PGXnwlP3OVp60Ncufu4Zs%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

I'm guessing we will now see these more often now that we know what to look for!

thanks Joe - that is indeed the one

I still think these are pretty rare. Probably comparable with the first issue DC TIEs that had the 'Special Instructions' leaflet

Very interesting. I was just thinking, were all the UK ones the blue background reverse? In my limited experience all the ESB UK shop sold die casts I've seen have all had blue backgrounds. Any with three colours or the black one out there?
