Sealed items

So just interested to hear peoples views on vintage sealed items. Personally the only type of sealed items I would have an interest in are original factory sealed cards as you can see the figure through the bubble or something similar like rebo band which also has a see through display. Getting a sealed item however , mainly playsets and ships, I have no desire for as there is nothing to view or display other than the original packaging. Appreciate all things to all people but just personally dont see the appeal.

Well the great thing about vintage factory sealed is that u r looking a a special piece of history hence its desirability and high price it commands in the market.

Me personally I prefer mint box unused contents sealed because u get the best of both worlds in that u can enjoy a beautiful box plus check out the contents in their original untouched state 8)

But I must say when I acquire a fully factory sealed piece I do not for one second think to open it like some I know do :!:

Also this brings me onto what I think is the pure pointlessness of Q grading :!: The box has already been opened :!: Therefore enjoy the piece to its full by taking out the contents every now and then and smelling the vintage goodness  Q grading denies one all of this :(

Never been a big fan of sealed boxes, I guess it's because you can't inspect or look at the contents (unlike carded figures).

All the ships I've ever owned were mint/unused in open boxes because even if you aren't going to display the ship or put it together, it's still nice to know it's actually in there.

I totally understand why someone would pay big bucks for a genuine sealed factory fresh toy though..although the big drawback with spending hundreds or even thousands on sealed stuff is that at any moment the tape seal could just pop off due to age..I'd rather not take that risk! :?

Completely agree with what's been said above. A MOC is a thing of beauty and should be preserved as such. The vehicles are also stunning things but I like to handle them and display them. I'd never buy a sealed vehicle simply for the fact that it'd be locked away in it's own little 'tomb', never to see the light of day (at least with figures you can see them through the bubbles). :D

I don't have many however I do have a few sealed items and understand both pros and cons pro obvious cons well your constantly tempted to open it ha oh and as for the tape issue mine is starting to come off my imperial shuttle only slight but it is lifting a little and obviously sometimes the tape just crumbles with age

I remember seeing a graded Kenner Rebel Transport that the tape had come away on, the box flaps on one end had popped open a little exposing what was inside but there wasn't much room in the case for it to slide out or anything..it just looked crap.

I shudder to think how much a piece devalues once that happens, is it like a -50% kind of thing? Given the premium someone would pay for a sealed and graded ship? I remember it was on ebay for quite some time - no takers!

I'd imagine it would devalue items significantly however if your collecting to keep for yourself an item is worth what it is to you however I suppose you could buy a MOC figure and then crease the card or dint the bubble I do confess if I could afford it ideally I would love all my items sealed

Been giving this very subject a fair bit of thought lately as my wife suggested she buy me something special for our 25th wedding anniversary. I knew exactly what I wanted - boxed Palitoy Millennium Falcon. Briefly thought about looking for a sealed box but I knew 99% of the magic was going to be when I pulled it out of the box like xmas '80 so decided open but unused was the best and I was right - after posting in the wanted thread Palitoyman (Richard) got in touch and look what arrived today

If you could have seen my face when I took it out, was instantly 8 again :D
I'm not knocking anyone that collects misb - if I could afford it I'd have both but actually getting to hold that ship again in my hands, read through the instructions and look at all the bits still sealed in the bag is nothing short of magical and that's something you can't experience with a sealed vehicle.

Cheers Richard - really appreciate all your help

I agree , sealed boxed doesn't do that much for me , don't get me wrong they look great on display , however big risk as the tape used will come loose eventually :?

I appreciate both MISB items and unused. I agree it's great to look at the 'new' vehicle/playset/figure itself, but there's also something cool about having the sealed box which hasn't been opened for all those years. A bit mysterious I guess. I do have a few small MISB vehicles on display.

I (had) a complete run of carded figures. I think they are by far the highlight of my collection, and when finances are better, will replace the ones I had to sell earlier this year.

I don't collect MISB vehicles. I admire them, and would love to add them at some point, but it just doesn't fit into the way I display everything. Given money and space though, I'd be all over MISB items.

thanks for sharing your thoughts on this but im now regretting starting this thread after seeing that beautiful unused falcon. Dam you , may the fleas of a thousand camels infest your armpits

I'm not into sealed items personally. I agree with you - you are paying a fortune for contents you will never see. The only aesthetic element is the box. As others have mentioned, if I had the space and the funds, maybe I would have some sealed vehicles displayed next to a mint loose example. I have a mint unused contents Scout Walker but I don't mind keeping it all in the box because I have my beat up loose childhood one too. Also have a mint unused Slave 1 but I display it loose out of the box. I like to see things. It even bugs me that my boxed Falcon has to live in the box, I'd rather see it but it's too big to have out anywhere and it would just get grimy and dusty. There was that thread a while back about the sealed graded 3 pack or six pack or whatever it was that went for hundreds and hundreds of pounds for just basically a brown box with some writing on the side entombed in acrylic. I was in the - what's the point in that camp and that's kind of how I feel about most sealed items, except MOC's. I have to say, that unused Falcon is beautiful, makes me feel a bit strange, takes me right back to the Christmas day (81 or 82?) when I got one as a present :)

Depends what it is. MOC's are the pinnacle for me because they are what we all used to see in the shops as children and you can own them now and see the contents. This is unlike sealed vehicles and playsets where the contents are invisible unless the seal is broken and the packaging opened. It's like a sort of collection chastity belt where instead of a key keeping you from the sexy contents it's the value

Those factory boxed items in which you can't even see the packaging irritate me slightly.

Iam the opposite i love everything about misb items which is probably why I've been collecting them for the past 10yrs. I love the rarity of them besides Mocs i love the way they look on display and that little peice of unopened history. I no there's risks with the tape drying and coming loose but you've risks with all types of collecting i personally send mine when i can for grading to add more protection and peice of mind. I do also collect Mocs but my focus is misb vehicles and playsets.
