Royal Mail handling fee/customs charges

The whole customs thing is very hit and miss. The last 3 things I purchased from the US all should have had custom charges, but thankfully none attracted a fee. I think one was marked as $7 and a gift (thank you seller it cost way more than $7), another was marked as $380 and gift but still sailed through no problem and the other marked as $50 but no fee either

Guess I was lucky :?

I got that sick of being charged & re charged with fees & charges even after putting the correct 55 tax code on parcels that I just admitted defeat & now have everything sent marked as gift & of a low value below $35 & if I loose a parcel just take it on the chin as customs & parcel force/royal mail tax charges etc suck big time & lets face it - they don't give a flying ****, same as with every other dam tax - when are they bringing the window tax back?? as I would not put it past them :x

I am done getting items from the states if seller wont do me a favour and mark as a 30 dollar gift, just got a bill frpm parcelforce of £208 custom fees and £44 handling, its stupid and on top of that sold something on ebay for £700, fees were £70 and then paypal took another £40 , its just throwing money down the drain....its all a rip off, best thing is to sell local in same country and pay gift lol

after reading this thread, ive just won my first moc from the states and asked the seller to mark item as gift and the value under $20. was this the right thing todo? i hope i dont get stung when it gets to the uk
