Rogue One question

I have a slight query over the title of “Rogue One”. There is not a character called “Rogue One” in the original Star Wars trilogy. Whoever is Rogue Leader takes the position of “Rogue One” in the Rebel Alliance and it is their X-Wing that has one stripe on its wings. The numbers of the other pilots run from two to twelve.

While writing this post I noticed that Wookieepedia mentions that "Rogue One" can refer to Rogue Leader, as defined by the expanded universe or a recent re-jig? I don't know. My information tends to be based on the films alone.

By the way I have a fascinating talk on Rebel Squadrons (where I even explain the calling in system) if I’m allowed a speaking slot at conventions, or I’m plied with a few beers.

Craig.

I thought the Leaders of the squads all had the One number as well.

The possibilities are endless with this new film, they can go in any direction.

I agree that the films could go in any direction and the premise is very exciting. Wedge Antilles could well be the main character.

Rogue/Red Leader is not called "Rogue One" in the movies, but the expanded universe is so vast there might be a reference in there somewhere. My first reaction was that "Rogue Leader" would be a stronger title and tie in to the original films.

I don't want to draw attention from the main discussion on "Rogue One" which is as http://www.starwarsforum.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=24506

Looking at the Star Wars CCG card for Rogue One, it says it's the vehicle designation for Rogue Leader.

So we might be getting a Chittychittybangbang remake with the Rogue One vehicle taking the title role

Or possibly it's about Wedge who was also Rogue Leader I believe (and might make a better film!) ...

I think it's going to be about a female xwing pilot. Marvel Princess Leia no 1 introduces into Star Wars canon / that males and females are competent pilots, as does rebels with Hera.

Very likely, especially given the media's interest in how few women were initially scripted into EP7, which of course then had the equality groups up in arms about A New Hope!!!

There's a theory that Rogue One could be a retconned Slave One.

Not as crazy as it might initially sound. Boba Fett is one of the most popular characters and ripe for a standalone movie. He's not an outright villain in SW and so could play a tough 'anti-hero' leading man. However when it comes to his iconic vessel its possible that Disney's market tests would flag up 'Slave' as being a denigrating and controversial term, and so the switch to Rogue. It might even be that the main character isnt Boba himself but his daughter (doubtless wearing that same iconic helmet and Mandalorian armour) and that her craft is called Rogue One.

Just a fun theory, and I expect its more likely to refer to Rogue Squadron but keep that thought in mind just in case...

There will be a lot of theories up until more information is released on the new film. My bet is that it will be based on Rogue Squadron.

In common with sith-smith, I question whether the expanded universe information is valid anymore. I hope the powers-that-be behind the scenes are not basing the new Star Wars films on information from old CCG cards, role playing guides and computer games. If they think that “Rogue One” is derived from the films, they need to go back and study the trilogy in depth.

Yeah, I thought Rogue group were only on the battle of Hoth. Yavin is Red and Gold group and Endor is Red, Gold, Green and Blue(?).

That’s right. You can add Green and Blue squadrons stationed at Yavin that are in the script and the book, but got cut from the finished film.

I had always thought that Rogue Squadron was a temporary code name for Red Squadron during the time spent on Hoth. Rogue was possibly a play on words, with it being derived from the word Rouge.

The expanded universe of course took the concept of Rogue Squadron to another level.
