Rip Off Confectionary!

God I spend to much time considering tastes of the pat long lost when it comes to chocolates, so just the thread for me.

I used to love lots of chocolate bars I would never consider eating now & that purely down to the fact that nestles has totally ruined the great chocolates once produced by Rowntrees Mackentosh, these I can think of straight off the top of my head -

Lion Bar
Aero
Kit Kat
Rollo's

Used to love all of the above, bloody hate nestles chocolate though & they now all taste like **** IMHO, dam shame.

I have to say I share your thoughts about the selections as well with Roses & Quality Street having nose dived like a herd of lemming aimlessly propelling themselves in to the void :| I remember when Quality Streets were all the same shape with different coloured wrappers with a Victorians lady's head on the wrapper with a bonnet on - anyone else?, I also used to do the squeeze test on sweets in the shops to avoid all those unpleasant hard centers.

God showing my age now but I remember being able to buy 2 mojo's for 1/2p on my way home from school & Bazooka Joe bubblegum with a comic strip in.

Star bars disapeared for an age & then reappeared in a new style wrapper, but not without an interlude of the Peanut Boost bar which was IMO just a Star bar under the skin :? , remember that faze when you could get like 4 or 5 varieties of Boost bars?.

So many I miss but at the very very top of the list for me was the Cabana bar made by Rowntrees back in the early 80's, a very finely chopped coconut bar with syrup or something, there was also a cherry verity at first, boy I would give a few stormtroopers for one of them right now - yum!

I remember the Trio adverts very well, how could one forget  - NOW!!!

I used to go up North to visit my nan when I was a nipper & always remember asking for a Coffee Aero when we went to the beach, not seen one of those in a millennium, some real classics have been lost but with some revivals like the Old Jamaica bars.

Anyway enough prattle, get a load of these - 8) 8) 8) 8)

I'm salivating now Frank

I want the Coffee Aero and I want it now - don't remember those at all

Funnily enough when I was 5 I won an 'Old Jamaica Chocolate bar' for coming first in a Pirate book competition at School. I was chuffed to bit's until I tasted the chocolate - I hated it, not surprising really a 5 year old is very unlikely to enjoy a dark rum n raisin choc bar :? Now of course different story would demolish it instantly :p

I used to go mad for those MOTU jellies which were supposed to be in the shape of the characters!

Poor pic but top right

Dude those were HORRIBLE lol. They were always warm... Yuk... Some quality sweets been mentioned here tho, wish I had a time machine. :D

They sell those Old Jamaica choccy bars in a retro type antiquey place near me - Bottany Bay, Chorley. ****ing fantastic :p

Does anyone remember those pink bubble gums with the pink and yellow/blue wrappers? What were they called.

If you want a classic example of how much sweets have shot up in price you just have to look at a packet of Polos. They used to be about 10p when i was a kid. They are 60p in the venders at work. Shocking  Don't know how much people used to earn then? It's probably relative.

I do remember 1/2p sweets, one pound notes, and the days before 20p coins. Must be getting on a bit :|

You wee slip of a lad, I clearly remember the introduction of 20p's & also remember feeling like a king with a roll of one pound notes in my pocket & mojo's been 2 for 1/2p  makes me feel like granddad saying when I was a lad .-.-

I also remember the chewies your on about, but never used to buy them as I figured the were a rip off at 2p when I could buy a whole pack for 5p!

You mean these- ??

Couple more classics for you -

Choc coated banannas
Bar six & swisskits - yummy for ya tummy

& the values of chocolate have gone stupid, bar 1 (excuse the pun BTW) - Turkish delight was always about 10p ++ more than other choc bars, but now is actually cheaper than some :? & I can remember when you could get 6 bars of chocolate for a green note

Can't believe that no one has mentioned 'Nutty bars'
Or 'Baccy'
Or 'gold rush'

I can feel my teeth rotting away thinking about them.

I always remember 'Whams' being warm and having to stretch it about 4 foot before it snapped, or freezing and ripping your gums open when it snapped in your mouth.

I remember in primary school watching a film (usually BMX Bandits) in the school hall and they'd put a tuck shop on for us. We used to bring in our pennies (rich kids had 10-50p!) and combining our money to buying piles of chews and sweets to munch on in the show. Although admittedly when the lights went out a few were chucked towards the front row

And I can now remember the biggest rip-off I've ever had with chocolate. I bought a 5 pack of something (wispa possibly) and got home and there was only 4 in the pack. It was sealed up. I was so pissed off.

Why are fun size bars called fun size? WTF is fun about them? Tiny, pathetic, miniscule, weasel cock size bars - I couldn't care what they're called. But fun???

I remember my mum getting boxes of chocolates when I was a nipper

Milk tray, black magic, Terry's all gold etc, always nabbed the Strawberry cream and Fudge

Do you remember the bar of chocolate might have been milk tray, it was a bar made up of the chocolates in the box

Just checked and there is a site tha sells some retro stuff, like the gold mine nuggets bubbly in the little sack 8)

Vice Versas you can get in the shops, saw them today.

Most of those Nestle sweets haven't been available since the 80's let alone 2006 :?

I remember biscuits with ROTJ characters on them...

Like 'Nice' biscuits but with Luke Jedi etc on them instead of 'Nice'.

Anyone remember these?

Oh my! Macintosh's Golden Cup bars were magnificent.

I'm a fan of Tunnocks splendid goodies like their Marshmallows and particularly the Caramel Wafers, excellent traditional style treats.

I think so. Were they the same as the ones with sport equipment on ?

Don't remember those Golden Cup things. Were they 70's?

Black Magic are legendary. The only time i've had them is when i've swiped some off a woman - e.g my mum or the Mrs. Strawberry flavour are amazing.

I would love to compare an old size Wham to the new size. It's a shame there is no way of comparing flavour because i'm sure things taste different now
