Hi all,

Let me know if this has already been covered, but i thought it might be a nice idea to have a skills section for Q&A, for example im an IT guy so you could post IT questions, we have roofers ect so we could all post our trades and people could ask questions and give advice.

It may already have been covered so just ignore me if it has

ok

re-installed winders XP and forgot to remove my second HDD

2nd HDD has 2 partitions so now winders has given my local drive the letter (G:) instead of (C:)

how the hell can i change it with re-installing?

its annoying the hell out of me lol

ALSO how can i merge TWO FULL partitions without loosing any data?

ta...

Hi to change drive letters right click the my computer icon - manage - disk management - you will see your drives on the right side at the bottom, right click on the drive in question and click 'change drive letters and paths' and you can choose any free drive letter.

With regards to the partitions, you wont be able to merge the partitions without deleting one partiton and then merging the two together.

hope this helps

ok-

dont working

pop up winder says...

Windows cannot modify the drive letter of your system volume or boot volume

GRRRRR

any other way?

Ok you might need to modify it from a boot disk, try easus partition manager, but thinking a bit more deeply you may cause some big issues with your installed preograms as they will still be looking for the old drive path for windows system files and .dlls.
Now that i have thought about it i wouldnt change it unless you are prepared for some issues.

You may be best doing another installation of windows to be honest, then take an image of the finished installation so you canrevert back to that image if you need to re-install windows, Macrium reflect has a free tool for this and it could save you a few hours.

Hi, yes it will image the whole system, XP and any installed programs, it will then restore it exactly how it was in about 15 mins. I use acronis but you have to pay for that, macrium reflect has a similar program that is free for home users.

I tend to install windows, all drivers, windows updates and then image it, then install all my favourite programs and image it again so i have two options...sad i know :)

If you ever fancy a fresh start, or get a virus you can roll back the entire system to whichever state you like.

remember to back up any files/documents as they will be removed.

Cheers

Andy

I've used the Mandriva Linux cd to split partitions without losing any data. I'm not sure if it works the other way around, but it might be worth looking into. Here is a post that I found on another forum explaining the process. When dealing with partitioning though I would recommend making a backup before trying anything.
