Photographic account of my growing collection circa 1979

That's great Martin good luck with collecting :D
Good bunch of guys on here, catch you on the forum mate

Great set of pics and so nice to see a lovely clear canopy on the Death Star gunner section, a rarity! The lightsaber you had was called a force beam and I still have mine although the plastic tube has long gone. They were bootlegs that we all had as kids in my area and I never even knew about the inflatable official ones until about 15 years later but I must admit I prefer the one I have to those official ones, you can do far less damage with an inflatable one!

I know I had my Death Star for Christmas 78 and my Cantina for my birthday of April 79 so I'd say your guess at the dates of the pictures is about right.

Thanks for sharing - Ian

Ah... it never occurred to me as a kid that the 'Force Beam' was unlicensed product- although it did always puzzle me why it didn't look like a lightsaber, I just assumed it was poor attention to detail and a rush to get the thing on to the market as soon as possible (funny how you work things out with an adult mind as an 8 year old!). Now it all becomes clear, cheers Ian :D

Smashing to get clarity on the actual year: looks like we shared a similar timeline with our gifts in '78/'79: I distinctly remember getting the Death Star for Christmas, so that would've been 1978. Then my birthday followed in the February, when I was lucky enough to get the Cantina and Sandcrawler playsets (spoilt? Yeah, there's no getting away from it  ). So those photos were taken early spring 1979, when i was 9 years old. Great stuff, cheers for that!

And Chaz, I'll look forward to bumping in to you on the forum, and I've been told by others that you're a thoroughly nice chap- so I'll be pm'ing you for a spot of advice shortly, if that's okay. And you too, Ian- I'm not sure what my focus will be for this first collection of mine, but whatever I go for first-off, I know it will have to be Palitoy like the stuff from my childhood.

Thanks again, gents- what an informative place this is :D

Cheers all, much obliged :D

It's looking like I may have some news shortly regarding being reunited with my original collection  It appears crossed wires many years ago in a conversation between me and my sister (I passed on the whole lot to my nephews back in the '80s, and I wrongly assumed the collection was sent to the charity shop when they had grown up).

Chatting to my sister over lunch today, I mentioned that I'd found this great forum and that I had rekindled my childhood love of Star Wars, and I intended to start buying figures again. She couldn't understand why when she's sure most of the stuff is still in her loft, and has been all these years. To say that I choked on my food is an understatement.

Mike Sith: I know I said I was going to wait until I'd actually got the collection in my hands before announcing (I still can't quite believe it, I'm a little shell-shocked to say the least), but I can't keep calm and quiet about it any longer

That's bloody fantastic news! I'm excited for you so can imagine how you must be feeling :D there's something about having your childhood collection in your possession regardless of its condition. Sadly mine and JrChubbs was all given away without our consent, something I'm still struggling to get over and come to terms with

Looking forward to seeing some recreated pics of you and your reunited sw figs and sets :)

Thanks, chaps- I'm just a little bit giddy, as you can imagine :D Mumbo: sad news regarding yours and Junior Chubb's collection

My siblings and I were laughing about recreating the original photo, now that I'm 'all grown up' and sporting a wing commander style waxed moustache :D it should make for a comical photograph!

Brilliant news regarding the collection!

And definitely do recreate the photo - it'll be your equivalent of the Beatles at Manchester Square (EMI)! You could always get some good photoshop chap to make the photo have the same effect as the original ones!

Magic pics there Martin, the gardens of the land must be littered with bits of vintage SW. Great die-casts, my landspeeder is also missing its windscreen!
