Hi, I am looking to buy some items on Ebay, but I dont want to use paypal. The seller accepts Visa and has had over 30 000 positive transactions. How is this payment processed and is it safe?

Are they UK based?
If they are it's much easier. I think you just do a bank transfer. If you have online banking you just get their bank details and transfer the money to them through there. Not unlike a PayPal transaction.
If you don't have online banking you can go to your bank and do it.
If they are overseas, even in europe you can be charged by your bank up to £20 for transferring money. It's a con but that's the way it is.

Thanks for the heads up Pete, they are based in the USA... my paypal is being a twat because a seller on a forum reneged on a deal and refunded me three transactions...now it wants a copy of my passport?!?!
I have had so many problems with Paypal.

Yeah i've had problems with them recently too, they're wankers.
I had to close down my account and open a new one cos they froze my original one.

A copy of your passport? Really? first time I have heard that one.
They are seriously smoking some wicked weed OR they have a Crack addict at the reins, back at the eBy/PayPal head office.

Dont send a copy of your passport, thats bollocks. way too much personal information, your opening yourself up for fraud.

Yeah there is no way I will do that. I don't understand why they make it difficult to use their service? This is the second account they have frozen on me. I am so annoyed as most sellers refuse to take cheques on eBay and it makes built from rs almost impossible. I may ring them tonight to try and resolve the matter.
I am with a building society so maybe there won't be any charges? What did people do before paypal?

Ed, if they've just frozen your account and there's no money there and no money pending, you can close the account and open a new one under the same name with the same bank card and the same email address.
It's the massive loophole in their system. As long as you have closed the previous account you will be able to do this. I just did it last week as they would not unfreeze my account and someone was waiting for payment. They wanted me to go through some long procedure like you. I told them i would not.

At first i opened an account with a different email and removed the card from my first account so that i could put it in the new one. This way i could start making/receiving payments immediately.
I emailed them to tell them i had done this and that their system is flawed but i just did that to get up their nose.

Once you got your new account you just tell whoever it is you're waiting for money from to pay again to the new email address. (if they have sent money to your old one they can cancel it and then pay to your new one)
Once i had sorted out that payment i then completely closed my old account and changed the email on the new account to my regular one.

Wow, that's cool Pete. I have tried that before but paypal basically put a stop on the card linked to my first account- when I tried to open another account it wouldn't let me us it because it has been linked to another account....
As I am that ****ed off with them I may try it as I am not too fussed about not being able to use their services in the future.
I will try this tomorrow and I will let you know how I get on :)

Thanks Pete, I appreciate that mate :)

Yes, you won't be able to use a card being used on another account. You have to remove the credit card from your original account and then you can add it to the new account and use it right away.

I wouldn't worry about them getting you for it. I did it two weeks ago and it's been fine. I also opened the account under Pete D Gowdy as opposed to Peter Gowdy. This was just a precaution. I also used a different email so if they contacted me about it i would claim to be a different person. Once i realised they weren't gonna do anything i changed the email to my old one. Again, my old account had to be deleted before i could do that. (or just change the email on your old one to a different one. It's the same deal as the credit/debit card thing).
