Parcel from Australia: VAT + fees?

Does anyone know if the same rules regarding VAT and fees that apply to parcels from the US also apply to parcels from Australia? I know I'm not from the UK, but VAT rules are supposed to be the same EU-wide.

Rule of thumb.........If the Government can squeeze a few Pounds/Euro's/Dollars out of you (especially for something totally undeserved/unjustifiable) THEY BLOODY WILL!
