Palitoy TV Advert

Squinting at it... I'd go for a vinyl cape Jawa. It might be wishful thinking, but it looks too thin for the cloth version.

Again, it might be wishful thinking on my part (the memory is very hazy going back this far), but I'm sure I remember a group of us kids in the late 70s at primary school laughing at the poor chap who had the VCJ while we were all sporting the 'new' cloth cloaked version. Children can be very cruel. Looking back, at least he got the last laugh... if he still has it in his possession.

I wish we were armed with mobile camera devices back then like kids are nowadays, would be great to look back at that period and to get confirmation of a vinyl cape Jawa in the playground, especially as our local toyshop (Youngsters on Ropergate, Pontefract) sold nothing but Palitoy on the Star Wars line- Kenner didn't start creeping in until 1982 onwards.

Well, his feet are anyway!!

I wouldn't see it as proof that a pali VCJ exists (not that i doubt it) could have been one sent from the states early t get a commercial made!

Only one i can actually remember is the speeder bike one!

I have a memory Martin where I think "great they now have cloth capes, that's better" upon seeing a cloth caped jawa, I'm pretty sure its a real one

Superb, that's great to hear Andy- glad I'm not the only one to be thinking along these lines... it is easy to doubt yourself! I shared those exact same feelings about the cloth capes being much more realistic, and wondered why they didn't use cloth for Ben, Vader and Leia. Must have been a cost issue on the production front... :?:

Well I know for sure that I had a VCJ growing up as a child in the UK back in the 70's but the only doubt that was ever put in my mind was people saying that it could have been a Kenner one shipped over to the UK. I know they did that with Yoda back in the day so although I will never know for sure, after seeing the recent sealed finds here in the UK I'm pretty sure it was a Palitoy one I had.

I so wish I still had the card back to know for sure but I really don't ever remember seeing a Kenner Logo on any of my first 20 and as I used to stare at the card backs for hours I think it's something I would have noticed. I also remember the day the cloth ones turned up as a friend of mines brother had one and mentioned it to me. He told me he much preferred mine and as I'd had mine for quite a while at that point I agreed.

I must admit that the cloth cape does look way more accurate than the vinyl one but I think because all the other first 12 with capes have vinyl ones it just seems to sit better with them to me. Now I wonder how I would have felt growing up with these first figures if all the caped ones had cloth capes.......

Strange they zoom in on many of the other figures but not the jawa :?

They probably wanted to focus on the main characters Lars but I agree a sandcrawler scene with Jawa's in the sand would have been brilliant :D

Yes that would have been awesome with such a scene :D

That's good to hear, it's easy to have your original thoughts swayed by all the naysayers! I can distinctly remember the figures arriving at my local toyshop in 1978, as I had been pestering the staff for weeks before because of the big advertising campaign Palitoy was running in the comic Star Wars Weekly.

I must admit, I was surprised to hear Richard say in a previous thread that it was always Kenner branded product from the word go in the North East, but here in Yorkshire, it was always Palitoy- at least for the first four years.

The first two figures I bought were R2-D2 and C-3PO, so I'm guessing there was a VCJ on the display stand, too... but at 99p a go, I thought I was getting more action figure for my ££s with the 3 and 3/4". So that kid in the playground with the VCJ that we were all ridiculing would definitely have got his from that same toyshop, I'd like to think that it would have been a Palitoy. The Jawa was one of my later purchases, and I was very pleased to have the 'new and improved' cloth cloak version at the time!

I know, I know... it's been said before... 'if only we had a time-machine'

Yep. That time machine would have been busy, think I would have bought up all the figs, but as an aside, probably just go back a few days as well and pick up the Euro lottery numbers just to make sure I'm covered

Great adverts, I can't remember ever seeing these as a kid (although I suppose remembering the Death Star one from being 6 yrs old would be a big ask  ). Anyone here actually remember seeing it at the time?

I remember the later adverts but not the SW ones. They are pretty awesome.

One I do remember (non-palitoy related), which I can't find anywhere, was with Alec Guiness doing his Kenobi bit for a refreshers advert.

Great adverts

Looking at them, you can see why some of the Last 17 were commissioned - the Ewok Village needed more Ewoks and the Speeder Bike needed a proper Luke.

These bring back lots and lots of happy memories - great times :D

I like the improvised Leia torture chamber thing at 56 seconds

For years I thought I had gone mad thinking I had seen as a kid an advert with Leia being held captive tied to 2 posts, thanks for proving I'm not a total loon

These ad's were regular features on Saturday morning telly

I guess that's why I didn't see them at the time... I always watched Swap Shop on BBC on Saturday mornings

I was 8 years old in 1978, and I can remember usually catching the tail end of the adverts... my family knew to shout "Martin! STAR WARS!!! whenever anything appeared on the gogglebox, which usually had me running in from the garden at break-neck speed. Hard to imagine in this day and age of being able to rewind live TV... but back then, viewing something Star Wars related was always a treat on the small screen... something akin to Victorians witnessing a Magic Lantern show, I should imagine
