As a kid, I was given a 'Treasure of the Pharaohs' board game back in the late 70's / very early 80's. I loved it; it was a 3D interactive game that you might think owed everything to Raiders of the Lost Ark, but in fact the game was released in 1974, some 7 years before Raiders hit movie screens in 1981. Instead, it seemed to be a cash-in on 'The Treasures of Tutankhamun' world tour, which ran from 1972 to 1979 and saw many of the actual treasures, including the famous death mask, travel the globe for people to visit in their own countries.

But back to the game! It was fun, dammit! :-D I loved playing it as a kid and held onto it well into my adulthood. But then, in a moment of madness that took place embarrassingly recently (as in, within the last 10 years or so), whilst having a clear out, I gave the game away, and almost instantly regretted it. That regret only intensified when I finally looked on eBay for a replacement and learned how much they generally go for these days!

However, I recently found a good, complete example that wasn't going for an eye-watering price, probably due to it being located in Australia, and many people seem reluctant to import stuff from overseas for some reason. Their loss, because today it finally arrived! And it only cost me £30, plus the same again in postage from Oz, which granted is a lot of money to pay for something I already owned and simply gave away, but it's also a lot less than most sellers seem to want for this set :-)

Anyway, I give you, the fabulous 'Treasure of the Pharaohs' board game which was made by a certain company many of us might recognise ;-)

This looks to be a great game and even with the magical Palitoy logo on it I'm surprised I've never seen it before.

It looks like a cross between the denys fisher haunted house game and Death Star play set (both of which I own :D ), which I guess is hardly surprising with who it's made by.

Really good to hear that you've managed to get it back in your collection without breaking the bank to badly and just remember in another 10 years when you're about to give it away....Don't Do It!!!

Thanks, Ian. Yes, there is a slight whiff of the Death Star about it as you assemble it, sliding one section of sturdy cardboard into the other, lining up the pre-cut slots to create the 'pyramid' itself! :-D

The game really is fun to play, with neat ideas like an actual block of 'stone' that needs raising before your token/man can pass through, a working trapdoor that drops you into a pit of snakes, and a spinning wheel that might or might not block your escape! :-)

If you're into board games, it's a neat one to have, it's just eBay prices usually have it up at least £80, and can even go well past £100, and I just couldn't justify spending that much on it.

As for giving this one away... they'll be prising it out of my cold dead hands before that happens ;-)

I'd love a gold one as well but you don't see them so often and these figures didn't age that well as it's hard to find them in good shape at times.

I'd love a gold one as well but you don't see them so often and these figures didn't age that well as it's hard to find them in good shape at times.

Out of interest what material did you use for all the stone work?

Dioramas like this really show off these vintage figures to their best and it's so worth all the work that must have gone into this piece.

Really good work, the music and lighting, and quality of the work really set the diorama off, you do get instantly pulled into the nostalgia of the film, if you know what I mean. :)
