old toy vs new toy

Just been reading DFran8's post regarding Friday 4th Sept, which has prompt me to ask the question.
Will the new toy range have any effect on vintage stuff increasing or decreasing in price, also what effect did it have on prices when the previous films were released ?
Pretty new to collecting star wars, having been a big collector of DC Comics so still a bit wet behind the ear ( do hope this questions not been asked before )

I doubt very much whether the new stuff will affect the vintage market in a negative way. I think a lot of seasoned collectors will stay away from most of the new stuff having being burnt the first time around with the prequels, certainly as far as financial investment goes.

I think vintage will hold it's value and possibly see a further increase when the new films actually hit. Will have to plateau at some point though.

My advice would be to NOT buy any new stuff for investement - just buy it because you like it, the chances are it will not be worth anything in 20 years anyway.

The truth is nobody knows - if anybody could predict future increases/decreases in value accurately, they would be very rich indeed. As the small print on any investment says, "Past performance is not a guide to future performance."

Many items have increased in value recently partly due to the hype around the films, but many items have not increased or in some cases even decreased in value over the last 10 years (eg the common loose figures or low grade boxed vehicles.) 12 backs, VCJs, and trilogo Yak Faces are three items that have rocketed in value over the last few years.

Only thing I worry about is reproduction figures reaching a standard of quality where it would be hard to tell the difference between vintage and new. I know Blue Snags repros seem to be on the bay lately along with yak faces, as well as the poon troopers and vinyl cape jawas which have been around a few years now. So far though most seen obviously not the real deal. I would hate to be someone who purchases sonething thinking it was vintage so am overly cautious now when buying the more pricey figures.

I will probably buy some of the new stuff as a SW fan, but to be honest, vintage is the one that makes me 100% happy, as it is, and will always be, the only merchandise that comes with "memories".

I don't think you can tell what's going to happen either, only thing I would say is as at Christmas I always seem to get some good deals on ebay auctions. But that's just me someone else will probably say they over pay at Christmas. Saying this the new toys are coming out in September aren't they?

I doubt it will affect the vintage market , it will be probably like the prequel stuff , not that collectible

I can definitely see a point where the repro market affects the value of weapons simply because it'll be that hard to tell real from fake. And no-one wants to pay top dollar for fake.
