probably been discussed before.

i was too young to ask for starwars for xmas in the early 80s.

i reckon AT-AT walker
followed by Imp Shuttle both for size issues

im guessing the falcon was high priced due to popularity also

Probably Palitoy VCJ me thinks! :D

Yeah but back in the 1980's no one realised how scarce a Palitoy VCJ was or would be (I bloody wish I did at the time  )

Check out the prices on this old Argos catalogue, you'll be surprised which item was the most expensive at the time :D

The Palitoy TV advert for the Ewok Village quotes an RRP of £51.60.

For that kind of cash - in 1983 money - I'd want some green leafy bits on top of the trees, action figures included, and a car.

Yeah, most expensive and most useless  (still would love to have a tri logo boxed one in my collection though..... anyone selling? :D )

The Ewoking Village was so pricey you'd only need 140 of them to buy a carded FX7 at auction.

Didn't think the At at was that cheap. Remember it being about £39

Pretty sure I remember that too. From the look of the Argos catalogue, I guess it's cheaer in there because it was an older toy at the time, so had been reduced. i know this happened a lot later - I got my Ewok Village for 4.99 at Woolies!

I distinctly remember the AT AT being £19.99 in the majority of shops from Empire through to Jedi

My memory has the ATAT and The Falcon being around the £30 mark when they were hot stuff. All based on the fading memory of a seven year old, of course. :)

The Scout Walker, Rebel Transport, and Land Speeder before them were quite affordable probably due to their lack of battery powered bits. Which makes me think - I never gave a **** for the battery powered features anyway. As an adult collector I've never even checked the electrics in the vintage I buy. Did anyone really give a **** about a wee red light and a buzzing sound?

Disagree that the AT-AT would have cost around £20 in the majority of shops when it first came out and during the rest of the Empire era :!: I defo rem Argos retailing it for around £36 and other independent toys shops including the well known 'Toy City' in Wood Green North London pricing it higher. What would the likes of Hamley's and Selfridges have charged :? When it came out it was the SW toy everyone wanted 8) just awesome 8) 8)

The cheapest I ever saw it during the Empire era was late. My local Tesco got a load of 1982 Kenner imports in-the example including the survival kit with half the box in colour and the other half non colour.
Anyway they were priced at £22.50 and Mum got me one for Christmas :D

I had a look through my cuttings last night and came up with some old adverts and catalogue pages. Frustratingly I have hardly anything from 1978 – 1981. These ads seem to be almost non-existent, perhaps because the Star Wars line was doing a very good job of selling itself.

Toy shops hiked up the price of Star Wars toys in 1978, with the 99p recommended retail price for the figures being widely ignored. I remember Star Wars having a reputation for being over-priced and being poor value for money. Other toys such as Micronauts, Action Man, Fisher Price Adventure and Cyborg were cheaper and came with a lot more kit (not that us kids were complaining – we wanted Star Wars!).

I received my Millennium Falcon at Christmas 1981 when it was a very sought after toy. My dad left it late trying to find one and ended up forking out over £30 (I think he was savvy enough to barter the shop keeper down). It was well worth it as it was my prized toy for years afterwards.

I'm not surprised that people have differing memories of the price of Return of the Jedi toys. The prices went crazy in 1983 only for them to fall back down again, perhaps due to negative news stories and customer reaction.

I was very surprised to see the photograph of the ROTJ toy ad mention prices up to £51.60. That was a serious amount of money in the 1980's as you can imagine. I suppose that referred to the Ewok Village? If so I'm very surprised. My cuttings have it on sale for £37.99 - £34.99

Of course in 1984 the prices fell through the floor. Asda was one of the stores that slashed prices considerably.

An advert I found from 1985 has the Millennium Falcon and AT-AT at £11.99 and £13.99. Interestingly it has the prices ay £34.99 and £44.99 which was probably when they were at their height with Return of the Jedi.

Like a lot of fans, I picked up a ton of Star Wars goodness in the Woolworths big sale, with the white circular price stickers. I didn't see any Star Wars figures bundled together, perhaps because I didn't get here for the start of the sale. Unlucky me!

Craig.

Really stunned at how cheap prices were back then. I think some of those prices were low even for back in the day. I can remember buying MASK toys with my pocket money that didn't seem expensive. But MASK cost more than Star Wars and you got less bang for your buck. Crazy
