I think Ove is right, on FB there appears to be 'social media pressure' to have something to show every week. In my opinion if you can't buy something outright then you shouldn't buy it financed on credit cards etc.

I haven't been on facebook for long but the recurring post of "Good mail day" accompanied by a pic showing often around a dozen high end pieces does make me scratch my head...

Yeah, you never see anyone post a picture entitled "bad mail day" where all they get is a massive pile of credit card bills and a ****ed bank account with a zero balance.

I could probably get enough credit this afternoon from credit cards to buy pretty much any piece that takes my fancy that might come up today. I could own any one of a number of grail items. They wouldn't actually be mine; all I would have done would have been to throw a shitload of cash out there, and there would be zero achievement but I would probably end up with about 400 new Facebook friends and a couple of pictures with a load of comments.

It's nice to receive compliments about your collection, but this not why most collect. I personally prefer the journey to the end, although I will confirm that if I ever get to the end. It's the journey where you meet people, see other collections, chat with other collectors and have the fun of sniffing out nice pieces.

I am very glad though I found the forum before the Facebook groups. I have identified and made friends of Facebook, but generally only people I have met or conversed with in real life. It is more clicky than the forums and there is not the same level of interaction. There are far more trolls and far less knowledge and everyone is an expert.

I've just seen a few of the eBay section threads about high prices. The one about the DSD going for £1000 is mad (even though it only actually went for £300 :? ).

eBay killed Star Wars collecting for me

 - there's an idea

'RS and its gutless, cowardly owner killed Star Wars collecting for me'

Thats more appropriate. :D

I completely disagree on the eBay point - if you were collecting in 98/99 there was a ton of amazing stuff just a click away - thinks many of is could never dream of owning otherwise.

Also, eBay bought tons of stuff out of attics and into collectors hands. It's made our collections so much more liquid too - which is great.

Agree on Facebook though - bragbook.

totally agree with the social media pressure comment, its the crazy collectors rushing to complete run and buy major pieces, desperate to post the "look at me" thread and get all the likes and comments, its as bad as the selfie craze.

these collectors are paying any price for any item and prices rising, then their thread is lost within 2 minutes with other dick measuring posts...

sad but so true.

we should do an episode of the podcast called 'grumpy old collectors'.. would be funny.

It's be the longest episode ever, and then people would complain about how long it took to listen to. Lol
