Leaving your collection to charity.

It's ' what happens to your collection when you die' time again.

I don't have kids and my beneficiaries are daft enough to sell my collection to Harry The Bastard for 250 quid.

So, I want to leave it to charity. I've seen charities list vintage SW on EBay properly in the past - as properly as a collector would. Does anyone know anything about what charities have experts to deal with this sort of thing. I'd prefer a health based charity but the quality of their handling of specialist items is the most important thing really.

Does anyone have any experience about this?

My relatives are well aware of how much I spend on vintage so i think they would call in someone like Vectis to value it before selling.

I kept getting moaned at until I insured the collection too.

Gotta love protective Aunties

I've told my Mrs to speak to a couple of my collecting friends to get my stuff sold if/when I croak. I'd sooner she has the money than it goes to a charity to be wasted (Im very cynical about these things, having seen inside a couple), and I don't want her thinking she has to keep them.

As my collection is pretty modest and assuming it happened sometime in the next few years I'd rather it be given to my lad to play with, sacrilege as that may be I'm bloody certain he'd have far more enjoyment out of a few more birthday and xmas presents to open from his dad than anything else

I don't have collecting mates to oversee it. I hadn't thought of the Vectis route. I've never used them. Is it possible to just had a lot over to them, with no expert knowledge, and say 'sell it keep your cut' then?

I think that's essentially what happened with the Frank Beech lot (on a huge scale obviously)

My collection is small tatties by many standards but hat's an interesting option. Thanks, guys.

I'd go the Vectis route too as it means that my family won't have to go through everything individually

Donate it to Jez, who can sell your collection to us and donate the money to the make a wish foundation.

If your planning on croaking soon, you can make a will quite cheaply these days.

Well I have thought about cashing in my collection in years to come for a pension fund. I would however like to b comfortable enough to not sell it! I have a lovely woman and family so would love to leave it to her and have my collecting buddies help her get the most cash out of it for her and the family if anything happened to me :?

But I really need to get a will and insurance sorted

The easiest way would be to kill two birds with one stone, and simply make it a charity auction. I'm sure Vectis would back something like that... all proceeds go to Star Wars Force For Change charity or whatever it might be. People generally bid more too if they know the proceeds are going to a great cause.

Seriously, you do!
So much easier to do it when you have time and not under duress.

Agree. It's cheap to do a will these days - they are generally very standard. If you're not married, then it's even more important IMO.

As for insurance - collection or life? Collection insurance can be had through normal insurers (mine is included in a John Lewis contents policy - Hiscox will include collections as well).

Life insurance is a bit of a bind to do, but plenty of people will help you through it - and definitely a nice feeling to know your other half will be well sorted if you croak. Worryingly, I'm worth more dead than alive, so should probably employ some kind of Roman-style food taster ;)

I'm the same, let's hope we pop our cloggs at the same time, that would be some sale! :D
