This may sound like a stupid question looking at the pic, but with Italians and their way of doing things, can never be sure...
Is this the norm -to find these sets put together with different backing cards?

Do you mean a mix of trilogo and Kenner? Yes that is legit I believe. Although I'm not 100% sure if this exact "foursome" is a known one - sadly many of these have been butchered as they had the rare hybrid Cloud Car Pilot in them. So many have either been broken apart or had the rare figure swapped out.

Ed is right about these 4 packs but in this example it's the HTF & valuable Trilogo ERG that has been removed and replaced at some stage.

Here are the correct known combos:

Only the pack containing the Vader has all the same cardbacks - Tri's.

..and the CCP! (if you are talking about "backs") :D

Ha! I knew as soon as I wrote it that someone might pick up on that :) Well for the record - I was referring to the cardback not the 'back of the card'... and do we not call the CCP a "Hybrid" anymore Joe? :p

So, I take it that this combo was not a legitimate one? Or is it a new combo?

Cheers,
Pat

It's hard to say with 100% certainty that the one in the link isn't legit but it's always better to be cautious with these. The fact that some of the header cards have been sold individually in the past combined with how many of these sets have had the rarest figures removed (CCP/ERG) means that it's far more likely that something like this has been tampered with rather than it being a newly discovered combo.

I believe the picture Christian posted was taken by Billy Boy of his four packs at a time when he was widely regarded as an expert in European Vintage Star Wars (before the..ahem "incident") . Billy was definitely ahead of the game back then and I don't think he was necessarily inventing information just for the sake of it but at the same time, it's unlikely that he personally saw every single four pack that was ever made to be able to make that statement..

It's true to say that those four pictured are the safest combinations though and that's simply because they exist in far greater numbers than any other.

AFA have graded more than a few Italian & German four packs that are "questionable" (meaning that before AFA graded them nobody had ever seen those combinations before..and in most cases still haven't!) but as we all know, AFA aren't really an authority on anything, especially not obscure European multipacks.

The message I really tried to get across in my old article on these is simply: "be safe, not sorry!" http://trilogo.info/features/italian-german-four-packs/
