Hi guys,

Am I the only one who starts a message with "Hi (insert name)" and ends it with " Regards/Cheers, Pat"?

I am astounded that when people pm and email nowadays, they NEVER use their name. Am I getting too old? Are manners just not 'cool' any more?

Cheers
Pat

It's not just you mate, and yes on reading this I did just check the message I sent you to make sure it wasn't me :p

Hi
Nope your not mate I do it also, politeness doesn't cost anything, are some ignorant people about though.

Regards Ian :p

I always make sure I say "Hi___" to whoever I am sending a message to and I also sign off with my name even though it's a little bit pointless these days when your username/email address is displayed on screen

Not sure if this is related to manners/being old but that very well mannered and old man Michael Sith always writes my name in capitals whenever he emails me

I generally try to on the first message. And if it's someone I don't know well, will continue to do so.

But with someone I know well and communicate with regularly and so have messages coming and going over the course of an hour, I won't keep it going

Possibly a mixture of familiarity and laziness! :D

I'm the same as Iian, first message Hi whoever and sign of cheers Adam. But some times I feel it gets annoying saying Cheers Adam at the end of every message. I agree with first post basically.

No - I get that Gary. And, I see no problem with that at all. Its when you have no idea who they are, never dealt with them before, and you get a one line "I'm interested in your such and such".

And then you start having a conversation with them, and you still have no idea who you're actually talking to. To be honest, I find it's worse on RS than here. Maybe its more a thing in the US than the UK and Australia. I also wondered if its the whole texting/facebook/tweeting thing where its all about a quick reply.

In any case, I hate it. And we all know where hate leads.... :)

Hi

Is this Star Wars vintage collection chat, or have I stumbled onto a manners forum by accident?

Best regards, Justin :D

It's been getting this way for years. I agree that it's an age thing. Being in my 40's, I remember when people actually mailed hand written letters, that typically began "Dear ____" and ended with "Regards, ____", or similar wording. I ALWAYS sign off on my forum posts with my name, and I had people at RS occasionally make light of the "stupid" practice.

In private messaging, I'll begin a conversation with "Hi ___", whether I begin the conversation or answer a first message, and typically end the initial message with my name, and drop them once a conversation is underway.

It's how I was raised at home and in school for correct written communication standards. Sadly, it's a practice being lost to time. :(

I'm completely with you on this one. On other forums I've had PM conversations go on for several days before I've finally had ask: "Sorry mate, but what's your name?"

It's something I've noticed with many of the younger (20-something) supposedly well-educated engineers at work. All their communication is by email, but they don't know how to put a formal (or even, in some cases, informal) email together. Add to that the fact it's usually illegible as they don't feel the need to use punctuation, grammar or spelling...

Unfortunately its not an age thing and it really does piss me off when I get a PM that launches straight into a lowball offer.
Inclusions of Hi, Bye, Please and Thanks will increase your changes of maybe getting a reply, maybe :D

Is it perhaps just a forum thing where some people are private about their identities?

Perhaps some people don't know your real name unless your username makes it obvious.

It bugs me but i always give people the benefit of the doubt. I respond with my name. If they reply again with just a Hi, and sign off without their name again then that starts to piss me off. Especially if they're getting in contact hoping to do a deal on something of high value.

There's one guy I've been dealing with for a number of years now. I've bought £thousands worth of stuff from him over time. He's always polite but I don't think i ever recall him using my name EVER!

NO KIDDING.

If I have a figure for sale for say, $500, and someone messages me with a polite introduction and asking if I would consider $350, I'll consider it and respond in a polite manner. If the same figure gets a reply of "I'll give you $350 for it" and nothing else, chances are I'm dismissing them outright and probably not using many manners in my response.

Do people really think that's a positive way to negotiate with a seller?

Hello all

I know where your coming from but it doesn't really bother me, it's just the way of the world right now.

I'm pretty sure 99% of the time I'll start and end my messages with the appropriate etiquette.

Regards
Mumbo
