How to play retro Pokemon

I have a really bad (or good) desire to play Pokemon. I was thinking of trying to buy an older gameboy, and such - but the one issue or thing that I always missed out on was trading the pokemon that could only grow with trading.

Does anyone else still play or try to play this game? What has worked for you?

There are also lots of good emulators, I'm sure multi player must work on those

The emulators didn't work back in the day for multi player. However $100 for a Game Boy color.
