I did this to an R5 D4 a while back tho the process was different and the leg was not ideally secured with blue tac!
So i came up with another method for creating a 3 legged R2 or R5 (not sure where you'd put it on a C3P0!).
I was originally planning to use sponge but changed my mind and went for polystyrene. I think either would work well.

First i gathered some tools and cut a chunk of polystyrene roughly down to the size i needed to fit tightly inside the R2...

I then dug a x shaped hole in the top using a small pair of scissors...

I then took 1 droid factory middle leg and lovingly sawed the top part off (lol)...

Now push the polystyrene onto the droid leg...

Now push the leg and polystyrene stopper inside the hollow part of the R2...

Now the only thing that could stop him is those pesky Jawas!...

That looks great! Reminds me of when I used to have sleep overs and we'd make terrain for our figures with our sleeping bags!!

I love how you've blurred the last picture so it looks like R2 is making a run for it

I thought the same - nice job Pete

And the uncanny way i've made my bed-sheets look exactly like Tatooine. It's all skills...

many weeks from now you will be mattress surfing with a lady and she will find a jawa in an awkward place :D ,

I bet that sheet got some heavy photo shopping done to it before it went live.

You beat me to it, I was thinking the exact same! 8)

Why did I bother doing the Photo Shop test on removing yellowing when Pete already knew how?
