Iain, Mick McCarthey!?

I'm so so sorry but Ipswich are beyond ****ed now! He's one of the WORST managers ever to grace a football pitch. He's up there with Bryan Robson, Gazza, Maradona and Ian Dowie.
It's ok though, the Conference is a great league.

Ha ha - not over the moon but he can't do any worse than fatty Jewell ... or Roy Keane for that matter.

It all started off so well at the weekend but we got a dose of realism on Tuesday ..... its going to be a long hard season

Gotta show due props for the mighty Batistuta!

I used to play an mmo and just wanted a classic 'call-sign' - and I'm bald so, Q-Ball. Everyone just called me Q. Whilst I like Picard's camp provocateur in Next Gen, I stuck with the name in respect to 2 local residents to me where I grew up - comedy legend Spike Milligan, whose bizarre solo tv programme after the The Goon Show was called Q, and Desmond Llewelyn, the classic Quartermaster from the Bond movies. Both very splendid gentlemen and sadly missed.
Also I'm too daft / lazy to think of another (or more Star Wars appropriate) name.

Could be worse Iain - I go and watch the non-league mayhem of Scarborough Athletic!

Still doesn't sound right to hear my first name said by anyone with an English accent.

Robson led Ipswich to two major trophies and several seasons in top flight European football. The successful period began in 1973 when the club won the Texaco Cup and finished fourth in the league, qualifying for the UEFA Cup for the first time. By the late 1970s, Robson had built a strong side with talent in every department, introducing the Dutch pair Arnold Mühren and Frans Thijssen to add flair to a team that featured British internationals including John Wark, Terry Butcher and Paul Mariner. Ipswich regularly featured in the top five of the league and in the UEFA Cup.[10] At their peak in 1980, they beat Manchester United 6–0 at Portman Road, a game where United goalkeeper Gary Bailey also saved three penalties.[11] Major success came in 1978 when Ipswich beat Arsenal at Wembley Stadium to win their only FA Cup trophy,[12] the triumph was followed by a UEFA Cup victory in 1981. The club also finished as league runners-up in 1981 and 1982.[13][14][15

Think it was either 98-99 or 99-00 season they came 4th or 5th. They had been challenging most of year if I remember rightly.

Glen Hoddle, much as I don't like him as a person, had a reasonably successful spell as England manager (ignoring his comments about disabled people) and he did OK, nothing too disgraceful at Spurs. Not sure anyone would have managed any better at Swindon. That team just wasn't ever good enough.

I included Gazza as much for comedy value, I think John Barnes is in the same category. Both have "managed" but neither are really managers. As for Maradona, yeah, I think he picked every man in Argentina at one point.
Ohh and Christian Gross had a passable record before he went to Spuds.

McCarthy has always been poor. His sides invariably struggle at the top/medium level and they play a horrible brand of football. You can tolerate Fat Sam's claims to be a half decent manager given his results, if not his methods, but Dick McCarthy is just a bad manager.

It's the truth. When I watched football in the early 1990s I remember Ipswich town had massive nets and they were bloody lovely. And an orange snake yoda.

My user nameis one I use for most forums. It started as my ebay name, obviously big into Star Wars so jedi_master was the obvious choice. That was taken so had to put an S at the end to make jedi_masters. Stuck ever since and as said use it for all forums.

he did well with roi though in 2001/2002 i think??? despite his spat with roy keane. he is a bore too listen to, i saw him mot2 the other week what a load of drivel he was going on about zonal marking and the other guy who was on the show said he couldnt quite grasp his methods, im assuming mccarthy was a defender back in the day

"He did ok with ROI"............ehhh 'yeah' and 'no'.

They did 'ok', in that they made a WC and lost on penalties to Spain (who were pish in those days). But a look at the players they had, by no means world beaters, bar Keane, but certainly with that squad you'd say challenging for a WC spot is about par for the course. Getting out of a group at a WC, I consider fairly easy for a European side, the only other decent sides out there are Brazil and Argentina, bar the odd country having a glut of decent players. On balance a second round exit is probably a decent enough achievement. But falling out with your best player before the thing starts, and sitting in first class while the players are rammed in economy, reeks of incompetance. I'm not even going to start on the style of footy they played.

And yeah, he is a muppet. He's one of those managers who has got a job cos he was a moderate player and knew the right people. He's messed up everywhere he's been and yet he expects people to listen to his opnions!?
Jog on son!
