How did you get into Star Wars?

Just to reassure some of the old gits that they're not alone...

I was taken to see Star Wars sometime early '78 so would've been nearly 5 years old. I have no recollection of watching the film but (weirdly) remember coming out of the cinema and thinking how cool it'd been. I know this was definitely when I went to see Star Wars as it was the only time we went to this particular cinema. Got into the toys not long after that and was obsessed with my Vader and Power Droid!

I count myself really, really lucky to have been of the age where I was old enough to see SW at the cinema, and young enough to still be playing with the first wave of ROTJ figures.

I've never, ever, looked back :)

Wish I could have seen it when it first came out but was 10 before I was born oh well saw the Special Edition :D .

Fair enough. Most of the vintage collectors I have known were born in the 1969-1973 range (I'm 1971 myself). Because of this, I have always assumed most of us were around the same age. So I guess that makes me the "old one" now.... :?

Not quite on your own Ian as we share the same birth year and my story is the same as yours for seeing it in the cinema in 78 (it was release in December 77 in the UK and didn't get to my home town of Bristol until around February 78).

I remember queuing forever and only just getting in with my Dad but it was so worth the wait. :D No idea how I'd heard about it prior to that although I did get 2000AD comic from prog one onwards back then and I read recently that they mentioned Star Wars was coming to the UK in one of their issues so it may have come from there. 78 and onwards (well for several years after anyway), it was all about Star Wars for me and I still remember clearly seeing the figures for the first time that an older boy from my neighbourhood was playing with…..it blew my mind and was the being of the collector in me! :D

Ian (we even share the same first name  ).

Yes, the toys were when it really took off for me, so while I saw the film in '77, the fandom didn't get obsessive until 1978.

So, two Ian's born in 1971 on this board. Nice. :) Such a wonderful name. The name of legends. Fleming. McKellan. McDiarmid. Holm. Astbury (who actually grew up down the street from me here in Canada before moving back to Scotland and forming The Cult). Does Scott Ian count? Then you, Palifan. And somewhere....I guess.....me, ruining it for the rest of you.

I knew when posting there would be a line of you oldies ready to pounce  It might be interesting to see the age range of collectors out there. Should run a poll.

I was born in '81 and too young to see any of the films in the cinema, so for me it was late 84/early 85. I know that because I remember Wild Boys by Duran Duran being on the telly when I was given my first SW toys :) I was in hospital and my cousin Will gave me a Han Hoth and Speeder Bike. And from then on I was hooked!

Ian, seeing as it didnt get a national release here until early 1978, you wont see many "I saw it in 1977" posts..

I saw it in 1978, then the toys .. first it was (i think) droid figures,.. Chewie too. I dont think I was bothered initially by people figs.

Technicalities. Sheesh. Asshole.

Then you got x-pack being a smart ass. "oldies"

I'm starting to think there's too many people like me here. :D

Ian

PS. edd, I hated Duran Duran until the song Wild Boys. That song was awesome, and it slowly turned me around into appreciating the band a whole lot more.
