Confusing i find your post James.....

One has "STAR WARS ACTION FIGURES Collect all 45!" written on the back, the other doesnt.

Wolfgang notes that his 30 used cardbacks which were shop sold in Germany (with wear and price tags etc) are all the type without text.

Same is true for my collection of used German cardbacks. Not one has the writing on the back.

It seems pretty likely that the ones with English text on the back were printed in error and therefore never released.

Ah i see, that makes sense.

One will probably just a typing error, or an error made by writing info out the top off your head, been there, done that to.

If they had been printed in error, 25'000 is a small enough number to throw away.

However if they had already been assembled (bubbles/figures) then its more than likely they would be kept, and something like a sticker would be placed over the top of the german text, for example to make them palitoy cards.

I work for a printing firm, printing errors like this are part of the parcel and as long as the stuff has not gone into production then it is usually easy enough to rectify by overprinting.
However if it has gone to the customer or gone into production then 9 times out of 10 we will get a sticker made up to rectify. Its a ball ache, so unless you are talking huge huge numbers its usually cheaper to throw stuff away.

I think the ones with the collect all 45's text were destined for a sticker.

Toy Toni has a pretty large haul of MOC that he has been selling for many years now. I've had a couple of palitoys and German 2-1B MOC from him over the years.
All of Toni's stock is the first card type without the "collect all 45" writing on it. All of the MOCs out there are of this type as he has been selling them for so long.
All my cardbacks are of the second type with the "collect all 45" writing present.
