High end ?

Yep high price sure doesn't equal high end though more often than not they go hand in hand :?
AFA and UKG highlighting the condition of a piece is the main reason why so many round of the mill pieces have such high fantastic price tags today!! There was a mis-card Tri-logo of Klaatu on a Klaatu Skiff Guard card that recently ended on eBay. Because it was AFA 90 it was priced at £999.99 :shock:
Now we r talking one of the most common mis-card Tris and needless to say it didn't sell. Now the grade sure is rare for a Tri-logo but at the end of the day it's a relatively common MOC.
So bottom end MOC with a top end grade commands a top end price :?
Not good :(
 
Bit late to this, but the term high end is absolute bollocks. A collector of loose/reseals is just the same as a collector of moc / boxed etc. This term was born out of people with deep pockets hoovering up everything that was deemed as mint as can be. Ive had it,sold it, and lost it and ive never deemed myself better or more important than the next guy. A collector is a collector, end of. Its all about perception of the the hobby in general.

Anyway, i collect high end Episode 1 stuff :)
 
I know what you are getting at hothrebel, you just obviously didn't word it well to start with :lol: When you mention "high end" it's easy to start thinking of the high grade AFA brigade..or just snobby collectors with loads of dosh (which is where people start getting upset because at the end of the day we all collect toys!)

I think you are basically asking where peoples individual comfort zones are with their purchases and which items fall into the "expensive" bracket for most people. It's obviously all subjective as others have said, to some £500 is a lot of money, to others it isn't but I do think that for the majority there is a barrier they daren't cross..once you do it's hard to stop ;)
 
Looking at the acquisitions threads I consider there to be plenty of high-end collectors. I see lots of minty MOCs, some of them graded. What more is there? Peter Cushing's slippers?

Yeah I think the term high-end just means expensive because it's rare or in perfect condition or both. Never given it much thought, means **** all to me! Anyone using this sort of spiel is prob more concerned with the value and prestige of these sort of pieces than the items themselves.

See, here I agree that this stuff is rarer, more exotic and therefore has the price tag to match so maybe that's high end, as in the high end of the market.

But most of his first shots are priced at less than a 12 back these days. There is no way that a 12 back is high end. Certainly not a tri logo r2 pop up sabre but they have been selling for this kind of money recently.

If you said "John over there only collects high end pieces" what does that mean? He will only buy a piece of it costs more than x amount of pounds? What does he do when the market shifts upwards?

As an aside, joe has a very good point about being careful where you personal limit is. You start off being happy with Mocs around £100, then your at £200, then you are creeping up to £300. I can see how people progress.
 
high end collectors to me has not been about the money you spend more the things you look for.
if you want a set of 12 backs be it kenner/palitoy mint you just need a big load of cash you could
get a set in less than a month! but if you wanted the Canadian utility belt sets they would be cheaper
but could you find even one :o ! but maybe I am a little old school now in my thinking.
 
This is all getting complicated, who cares high end , low end , big end :lol: , we all love our own collections

It's not the money it's the journey and the experience

For as much as I hate the term "High end" (just because it sounds so snobby!), "high end" definitely exists and is very real thing in this hobby. Bonsai posted a good example with that sales thread as those moulds and hardcopy play dough items were not only "high end" because of their high $ value but also because of their importance/uniqueness etc.

There are many people (that no doubt everyone on here knows the names of) that are considered to be "high end" collectors and their are plenty of "high end" collectibles out there too. Whatever your collecting "level" though (if there was a need to categorise ourselves..which there really isn't) the important thing to always remember is the fact that we are all here for the same reason and that's simply because the toys mean a lot to us. It's a safe bet that at some point all those established names in collecting who chase amazing items probably all started with a very modest loose set just like all of us. If you love the thrill of the hunt then can take this hobby as far as you want to providing you have the means and are prepared to do what it takes to own certain items, other people are obviously satisfied far easier so everyone is different.

On the subject of budgets, at the end of the day whether you spend £5 a month, £50 a month or £500+ a month on Star Wars toys, as long as you are doing it for the right reason and you are happy that's really all that matters. All you need to do is collect for yourself! :)
 
Is it all relative perhaps? To me high end would be spending like a grand on a MOC. To someone else it maybe dropping 50k on a less than mint Carrie Fisher's Princess Leia g-string :wink:

...I bet someone out there has one! :shock:
