Hello all

I'm new to the website and new to collecting star wars stuff.
Just wanted to say hello and introduce myself.
My name is Nick.
I used to have star wars when younger but as is the case with so many kids, mine got sold off by the mother when i reached a certain age. The only stuff i have is some West End miniatures that are not really of interest to me.
Looking to start my collection again.
Any good strating points for a beginner? Not looking to spend much per item at the moment - maybe £20 per item. Any good tips for what to look for for this price?

Welcome aboard! £20 per figure is a pretty decent budget, as an average price I think you could easily put together a full set of good condition figures - some will cost you £5, some will cost you £40, but I'd say on average most can be picked up for about £10. A couple can cost £50+ like Yak face.

If you're interested in them, there's also a reasonable amount of carded figures you can buy for around the £20 mark.

I would suggest buying from trusted members on here and other sites, and sellers with good feedback on ebay. Ebay is usually cheaper but it's easier to get ripped off, especially with fakes weapons.

Just to get some history, how have prices changed in the last few years? Is this a market that keeps going up?
Is it worth investing in graded uncarded items? What are your main areas of interest and what do you look out for when buying figures and vehicles?

And i know it's off the subject here as this is Kenner but any thoughts on the lego star wars stuff? I'm a bit of a sucker for it and Lego has always seemed to be so collectable.

I am also a kind of newbie here too mate.

I started with vintage loose figures graded at C8+ ... you can grab some real nice ones at cheap prices when you know whats a fake or not... plus if you do get ripped occasionally... a £4 model isn't going to hurt as much as an MOC !

Prices have changed over the last few years, unfortunately for the worst, but recently they seem to be climbing, however you never can tell on ebay!

Don't expect to buy a figure and expect it to shoot up in value for at least 50 years!

Personally I don't buy loose figures or vehicles and only go for carded figures. Always be very scrutinous on ebay and don't be afraid to put a link to a figure or a picture of it at least in the ebay section for an opinion.

The people on here are very knowledgeable and helpful (although a little messed up in the head :wink: )

Don't know too much about lego personally but I do know that to some on here it is very popular

No problem! To be honest I assumed you were talking about loose figures. There's not many carded figures you can pick up for £20, especially in good condition. For that kind of price range you're looking at poor condition or unpopular ROTJ figures like Klaatu. You'll need to be spending at least £30 - £50 per figure for good condition carded.

As said prices have dropped on general, although the super rare figures have continued to rise in value. I wouldn't recommend only collecting as an investment, there's a real risk that one day interest will dwindle and prices (demand) will drop considerably in my opinion.

Welcome to the forum Nick.

A great place to start is to build up your loose collection, gets you back into the swing of things and gives you time
to see where your collecting takes you.

Lego is very addicitve and also a great investment. Some Lego sets go for amazing money as do some of the MiniFigures.
There are a few minifigures that sell for £40-£50+

Good luck with what you decide and ask for any help you may need along the way.

Hi Nick,

My advice to you which has worked for me over the past 14 years of collecting is don't buy crap. Pay the little extra & buy mint/near mint items. They will look nicer on display and when u come to sell it will be 10x easier.

Welcome to thwe forum Nick. Make sure you check the sales page here as loose figures come up quite often and will be very affordable. Like Edd says, the odd figure will cost 40-50 plus but most will be under a tenner.
