As I'm just really starting on my moc collection I was wondering what focuses people have and why....and possibly any recommendations. Would it be better to go for a full set of a certain cardback or a certain figure?

Hi mate.

Focus on something that is right for you.
Choose a favourite area of collecting ie. Loose Figure Variants MOCs Baggies. Then choose something that fits your budget. Fav Character Fav Film Era

Try to real think it through tho and dont rush into it Collect wahatever you wanna collect. A Luke Hoth or Biker Scout focus would look Great :)

Well I know I want a complete loose collection which is kind if my one project.

A hoth Luke would definitely be high on my list for moc, is that going to be affordable to do?

Pick a character you like, pick a budget.

My focus is vintage star wars instruction leaflets, bizarre!

I buy everything vintage so it opens up the opportunity to have multiple focus at one time. So I'd say my focus are:

01: complete loose set with variations that consider legit
02: set of 97 MOCs
03; set of all logo MOCs
04: complete set of Star Wars Marvel UK releases
05: TIE Pilot production run
06: store displays (including fillings)
07: complete range of 1983 bubble baths

Then there's other stuff that will become a focus such as die casts and card backs that will become focus when others are completed.

I find having a handful of focus running at the same time keeps it fresh, especially if your primary focus market dries up for a period of time.

Also note that having multiple focus with different price ranges allow you to still collect when money's tight. If my primary focus only has pricey items left to buy and I'm financially have a difficult time, I'll buy some items to fill a shop display.

And any topps candy heads would be also be great.

Good luck.

Wow that is rather unique! How's that going?

not bad i have over 200 instructions leaflets including some nice bi-lingual canadian ones/german/lili liedy etc.

I have a focus showing them off over on TIG. I will at some stage transfer it to this site.

That would be cool to see walkie

And thanks Maulster, that makes a lot of sense financially and like you say with things drying up!

Well I can just say do what you feel is right for you.

You can also have more than one item to focus on and sometimes a focus need a break.

I have multiple focus at one time, but some is more importen than others :D

A loose set of vintage figures sounds like a sensible way to start.

But ultimately get what you want/can afford. There's no rule that says you have to have a focus other than Star Wars. There are loads of focus possibilities but none might be what you want.

You may also find that you start with one thing and it soon develops into other things.

I started with a loose figure run. That soon developed into other things. Eventually it ended up with Palitoy MOC. But even that ventured off into miscards.

There are loads of other things I'd love, but money and space restrict them.

As all the other guys have said . Don't jump into it , keep more then one focus and only collect what YOU like . Not what other people think are cool right now .

And then then try to think a little ahead . On how you will display the stuff . It might seem cool to start collecting all the RTOJ moc's . But it takes up a lot of space . I had a WBG and other moc's focus going .

But i did not have room to dispaly it all . So most just went straigt to drawer , and stayed there . So i have sold almost all and now my focus are on proof cards
See it here : http://www.starwarsforum.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=13628

I where thinking alot on why i collect , and what i like with SW . And the thing that makes me happy are the packing . So i don't need the figueres on the cards . So proofs where the way to go if i where to still be happy with my collecting .
And on the side i collect cardbacks and boxes with Danish price stickeres .

Let us know what you start on :)

Ps. Walkie that is a cool focus ... Love to see a limelight

I am definitely going with a loose collection as I'm already getting all those figures I never had as a kid. A hammerhead showed up Saturday and it was like my five year old self woke up with glee!

For the carded, definitely need to get thinking!

My focus is Walrus Man, currently vintage variations, but a bit of modern too, thats the good thing with a focus, you can take it anyway you want, characters, films, cardbacks, brands, intruction pamphlets, baggies, bootlegs, COO, rebels, bounty hunters, cantina aliens etc etc.

But dont get too focused on a focus, focus on something other than your focus or you might loose focus on your focus, then it all becomes a blur.

Lol, I think you need an award for the amount of times focus is used in a sentence! That does make a lot of sense, you don't want to become over saturated on one thing

After completing my loose figure set my focus has been collecting the major variants and also POTF prototypes - but only the ones that are significantly different to the production version - not just because they are missing copyright markings. Although I'm really struggling with this focus its very satifying when you manage to add a piece. Very recently i became interested in Palitoy MOcs and its given me a bit of fresh collecting energy as I'm starting from scratch again. Whilst my progress with the prototypes is very slow I still get that great feeling of making some new acquisitions.

I sometimes feel very focused then after a few months of random buys I feel a bit overwhelmed. Doing well at the moment though due to lack of funds lol!

Ideally, what you want to focus on are all the figures I currently have for sale.

But hey, that's just my opinion!
