Feeling disillusioned with FB groups...

Mark?

I don't agree with the majority vote but hell I am always in the minority, I do use FB since the baggie group came about but SWF is my home, no other place like it & IMO the forum is much easier to use then FB, plus its not full of dick measuring/comparing idiots, spend more time here & familiarise yourself with the working of the forum & you'll have a more stress free hobby buddy.

Bleaching is IMO OK if its something for making dioramas etc for your own collection, but should never be sold on, disclosed or otherwise.

Facebook is the most blatant invasion of privacy and whats more people allow it.

Never used it, never will :D

Well said Jez. If you only use FB and not the forums then you are missing out on so much good stuff. I'm more on RS than here and TIG but I have many good mates on all forums and they are all great in their own way. There are definitely loads of knobs on the forums though, don't get me wrong, they can still be very frustrating. I guess you just have more serious collectors who care about their hobby.

Mark I saw that vote on Echo Base and it was disappointing. Kudos to those blokes for giving it a go as they are really trying and are very community minded. But maybe something damaging like bleaching could have been a straight up admin decision rather than leaving to the masses to decide, especially when many of the voters did not seem to understand the issue being voted on. Damned if you do damned if you don't I guess....

I was pleased that's the admin gave it a democratic vote, it shows they do listen to the members.
It quite funny, you get people waffling on about how restoration is a good thing and turning their point of view into facts, rights, having their liberty denied etc...
I didn't wNt any of that. I just don't want to see it. I am not a scientist but my gut feeling tells me it's wrong and that it goes against my collecting principles.

Member votes are fine but ultimately I make the rules in my group whether the group members like it or not.

Mother knows best.

:p

I think FB is too throw-away. People are so used to just throwing comments onto threads or their status, so when they respond to one of the SW threads in that way, and everyone is doing the same, it ends up a mess.

To illustrate, I think Ross put up a thread about 12b and 12c values for the first 12. When I looked I think 90 or so people had responded. All good so far! But only 3 did what he asked. Oh dear  3!

The other 90 odd posts are people just spewing any old crap - some are saying which they want to buy, some are saying what they sold one or two of them for, some are pissed that no one is answering the question, some are arguing with them, most people are talking about 12a's anyway. Sensible idea for a discussion, completely the wrong platform. Within a day it's all forgotten anyway.

There are few fans of moderation on SWFUK but FB could do with a big chunk of it to keep people on topic and sensible. But then why would they, when in their other posts they're telling people they had broccoli for dinner

....... and f##ktards

Now there's a word that is underused, particularly in relation to FB.

I started looking at the FB groups a few months ago. I found myself looking very regularly for the first 4-6 weeks but since then I've spent less and less time on there. Don't get me wrong, I've learnt some things, particularly from the more informative groups like Joe's Trilogo group and the Pre-production group. And I've picked up a couple of nice bits at what I think were very good prices including a Palitoy 12bk DSC, a reseal Palitoy 30bk Bossk, some brilliant preproduction bits (not high end stuff by any means but I like it) and some loose figures, all from outside the UK. And I've picked up some vehicle spares I was looking for and have managed to complete my loose Snowspeeder and Rebel Transport as a result.

So, there are advantages for a bit of learning and some good buys, just a shame that you do have to wade through the mire of benality to get there.

Can't beat SWFUK and its zero tolerance for tomfoolery.

Hi Mark
It was ridiculous wasn't it! I really don't think people grasped what they were voting for and I think they automatically voted against 'being told what to do' even though that wasn't the case.
I understand why you raised the topic as it seems the 'newbies' are being directed towards the peroxide treatment before they've even tried to find a minty white storm trooper!
I'm not certain it does damage the figures but I'm not certain it doesn't. That, in my eyes is good enough reason to not promote the practice. Is the chance of ruining figures worth the extra few quid saved when buying or made when selling? Not for me it isn't!

I'm not one to usually chimes in on debates but I have a slightly different perspective to the unfolding events.
I have seen and heard all sorts of fors and againsts regarding facebook groups recently and was totally anti facebook for years until I had major upheaval in my life last October. After years of being dedicated to work and being anti social media believing it is for the likes of people on the Jeremy Kyle show and is more trouble than it's worth, I got convinced to give it a go with the suggestion to meet all my old friends again.
Now I have embraced Android technology in recent years and do pretty much everything with my smart phone to the point I have not had a computer set up at home since 2010.
There is a distinct ease of use with my stupidly large screened mobile phone and the compatability of facebook.
The industry I work in we have embraced video technology in the last 12 months and have designed a platform to showcase our products in real time whilst giving commentry, personalised to the customers needs. One of the statistics that was highlighted to gain our engagment was that in the battle between desktop pc's, laptops and mobile devices (smartphones and tablets) 55% of time visiting retail websites was from mobile devices.
Another statistic was that in 2010 UK smartphone penetration (ownership) was 25% and had increased to 76% in 2014, so facebooks collecting group uprising is more a result of there platform meeting consumer demand.
Facebook is not going away in the near future, it was floated on the stock market for multi billions of dollars however i am sure as technology evolves into the naxt phases through time there will be different platforms that become pioneers of technology just like Samsung and Apple took over in recent years where Nokia and Eriksson dominated.
I only found the facebook groups as a result of the former SWFUK podcast item on U-Grading and signed the petiton. Well I hadn't realised all of these supporting groups existed so in May joined a few.
I have since met several friends on there and communicate with them on a regular basis including several forum members like James who posted previously to me.
Yes in the early days of joining I may have limelighted, commented on threads and liked other peoples limelights and got carried away with how it all works and even dominated my own facebook page to the point where my friends stuff is washed well down and hard to find.
But I have also met great people, seen items I never thought I would ever see for example POTF Yak & Anakin MOC's so it's not all bad.
Richard H posted a great article last night and suggested reducing the amount of groups you don't interact with and that was sound advice.
I am no advocate of facebook just share a slightly different perspective and have recently actually gone the other way.
I am now sat here tapping away on a laptop I have just acquired so i can join in on debates and upload images for all to see.
I think facebook is here to stay and adds another string to the bow of collecting, whever it is for you is a totally different matter.

Maybe I should post more often.

Its Frank buddy, you need to get with forum life, its where the **** goes down, FB is ok for watching sales & seeing what's out there, but if you want to actually enjoy the hobby with like minded folks SWF is where its at IMO, long live SWFUK!
