Is this normal? I ordered three ESB reseals from the US. Paid the postage stated by the seller. Now i have to pay another £16.50 to have them released to me by Royal Mail. I wouldn't mind but i thought i had a right touch winning these items for less than $5 each on Ebay but the postage has crippled it. I think the total postage is now the original $27 + this latest £16.50 ...whatever that comes to. Not doing it again that's for damn sure

Ouch, yes I'm afraid so. You have to pay VAT plus an £8 handling fee if the value is over £15, or it can be up to £40 if marked as a gift. However are you saying the value was under $15 ($5 each)?

Sure mate that is the EU rule, if you buy in a country that is not in the EU then you have to pay customs if the value of the goods + postage is nearly £9 converted from danish to uk currency. But if it mailed as a gift then the value may be nearly £130 converted from danish to uk currency.

I do not know if some eu countries have a special law about this, but It is a standard EU law. Because EU want us to buy in EU so we do not loose jobs. Funny how can we loose jobs when we are talking about vintage star wars :? I contacted EU about this and they just say they will look at it and they have been saying the same for the last couple of years.

The problem is HMRC include the postage cost in with the value of the item inside. So although the items will be $15, add in the postage and it puts it over the limit.

I thought I read somewhere that there was a special rule that applied to vintage toys... so the customs duty is applied at a very low percentage rather than it being classed as a "brand new" item? :?

To make matters worse, I had to pay 19% VAT once not only over the value of the merchandise, but also over the shipping costs! As the shipping costs are often doubling the total, this is F-ing ridiculous.

Ouch indeed! Robbing bastards  ..i'm putting a lot of evil faces on my posts today :? Must be that way out :p

It would hardly be worth ringing up as the call would probably wipe out a lot of the refund.

This problem is ongoing mate i'm afraid and i would just put it down to experience now and settle for the **** we get in the UK

Cheers anyway guys. This deal keeps getting worse all the time  I'm actually amazed the cardbacks have shown up at all. Could have sworn the seller was going to gazump me. Oh well. Lives and learns

When & how do these duties take effect? Are they only related to business transactions, not private sales?

I ask because I have had people mail me items from all over the americas, and not once been charged any import duties on Star Wars items

Well they must be getting desperate and today I got a note through the door demanding £2 in VAT and Duty with an £8 charge from Royal Mail on top of that. To make it worse the items aren't liable for VAT or Duty, I am really tempted to give Royal Mail an invoice for several hundred as my handling charge for picking up the items. The end can't come soon enough for Royal Mail.

and add ebays stupid "global shipping" program on top where they try to charge you extra taxes on the shipping cost for premium handling, its all a pile of ****, i request an invoice with standard USPS shipping

Same here, request an invoice from the seller, they can then amend invoice and take out the 'Global Shipping con' and put their normal postage on it only
