Hi guys,

Anyone's thoughts welcome...

What was and do you think will be the effect of the new Star Wars films will have on the Vintage Figure Merchandise?

Like I said feel free to add your opinions.

Bram

Its going to put the prices up for a period of time as new blood comes into the hobby just like Episode 1 did back in 1999. However i think that the meteoric price rises will be seen in modern stuff. Most of the kids who went to see episode 1 are now in the mid 20s some are working and have a disposable income just like we were in 1999 i was 23 at the time in work and started buying vintage but as most of the younger generation never collected the "original vintage" i think they will start buying up what we call modern stuff to relive a bit of their childhood just like we did in 1999. Just my two cents.

Yea I think everything will get pricey for a bit new ppl will dip there feet into vintage collecting and also Modern but it will all calm after a while.
I think MOC's will go pretty high! :|

Yeah we can see the trend of Moc's going up in prices allready now.
Look back 5 years and now.... I guess this would only drive the price up.
Good for those who want to cash out, bad for those still looking for pieces.

I am still hanging on to finding pieces for the same price , i passed on them a few years back, back it's gettin gmore and more impossible....

It's going to get crazy, that's for sure. Carded figures, especially 12 and 20/21 backs are already at insane prices and I don't see them getting any cheaper. Everything else may see a temporary rise in price.
I'm mostly dreading the onslaught of merchandise that will arrive in 2015. Remember 1999?You couldn't move for episode 1 crap, almost every shop on the high street had a giant cardboard Darth Maul or Jar Jar Binks grinning at you.

Sorry to take this off at a Tangent but I find the collectable market fascinating, I colllect load of different items medals from every era from the European nations coins stamps and even a few bits of victorian art what i find most interesting is how some things have suffered really badly over the past 5-6 years and other areas have done really well, German WW2 items are down heavily all across the board prices are still way below 2008 i originally though this was due to it being a mainly American driven market but Vintage Star Wars is a mainly American driven market and its done really well. stamp prices apart from the incredibly rare are through the floor and british WW1 and WW2 items have pretty much flat lined neither up nor down but Victorian medals to the British seem to be making good money again and thats bucking the past 10 year trend on them my current tip for the top is Imperial Prussian medals pertaining to the 1813-1815 campaigns no one seems to collect these but they are incredibly rare 200 years old and worth next to nothing, these guys fought against Napoleon in 1813 for christs sake! and they can be picked up for less than a good loose Luke!

Carrying on from that mate, the weirdest thing I can't get my head round is that Yak Face on POTF MOC is around the same price as an Anakin but loose it is around 15 times the price.

VCJ's are £400 but a pre production 21 back proof will cost you around the same.

Sometimes the numbers match up sometimes not!

IMO

Bram i agree completely, I think the price of some of these items is being inflated beyond its actual relative worth by newer collectors who dont have that much knowledge of what it is they are buying, but have read the usual books and old internet posts on the subject. I knew nothing of protos or proofs i couldnt understand why anyone would collect bootlegs either until i found this forum and RS but i did know about the legendary VCJ's Blue snagglys DT Lukes Yak Faces and (Kenner) 12 backs non of which are rare but are desirable especialy to the newer collector.

Yup, its that combined with auction houses, people trying their luck and people who don't have a clue writing articles or listing their figures as ridiculous prices... It only takes one to sell and someone else to list at the same price and then that to sell to the guy who missed out on the last one for it to drive the price up!

A lot of people with a LOT of money out there that just pay what is asked too!

Also, a LOT of people believe they are sitting on a gold mine when in fact they have a load of figures and ships mot complete from when they were a child. There is not enough actual knowledge out there telling people that its actually not worth that much.

HEH HEH its the $tar war$ mentality! Prices are going to stay whacky for a while, the good news is if you want to play the game sell up a week before the film comes out and then rebuy everything you had in a years time at 40% of what you sold it for :)

Hey! I have some Ep 1 rubbish for sale

Me too, can't ever see it going up in value. Just far too much of it around

It's all supply and demand, even if demand picks up a lot cos of the new films, there would still be an over-supply and what's fun about collecting something that's common anyway ...

Keeps my lift full anyway

To be fair there are a few hard to find EP1 toys i.e Boxed Naboo Royal Starship, Fambaa etc but its the idots with a Dancing Jar Jar Binks or Moneyboxes that get on my nerves.

There was a sharp increase in prices between 1993-1999.

Particularly in 1998-1999. SW Death Star Race Game £350, most 12 inch dolls were £350+ each.

Episode 1 was massive. I think you will see the same again.

A lot of the items, especially oddball and boxed vehicles dropped in value after Episode 1.

The same is happening again. I am actually being outbid on oddball items, which is unusual as I use to be the only bidder.

MOCs on eBay are now going for strange prices- some well under value such as the recent Italian 4 packs and some over the top like the trilogos and palitoys.

Cardbacks have especially gone through a massive pay increase.

I think this is just the beginning. Every vintage item will go up in price. (Sell your collection if Mark Hamill is in the trailer- you'll make a killing).

As this links the vintage trilogy to the new trilogy, I think you wont see such a drastic hike and drop in prices like you did 2000-2005.

If the film is good- man- I have no idea.

It could go crazy hype vs an ageing collecting community.
