Customs from the states

Hey guys any idea how much customs charges would be to have a moc sent over from the states?

Thanks.

Depends what they declare dude. I always have it tracked with $30 declared, but on. MOC it is riskier.

Its always risk vs reward. As in customs charges vs getting it lost or damaged.

Hope this helps?

$30 will almost double your costs in the tax you'll be charged.

20% of $30 = $6
20% of shipping ($15?) = $3
+ £8 handling fee = $13

Total fees = $22 (£14)

You don't get charged if its $30 or under there is a threshold. Unless I have been very very lucky?!

Anyone else?

it has to be marked gift though, if its not then the threshold is lower. so mark it gift and it can be up to £40 in value, if not its £15

2.3 What are the limits for customs duty and import VAT?
Commercial consignments i.e goods you have purchased, of £15 or less are free from customs duty and import VAT.
Note: This does not include alcohol, tobacco products, perfume or toilet waters; these items are excluded from the relief of duty and VAT at import.
In addition, commercial consignments sent to the UK from the Channel Islands do not benefit from any relief of import VAT.
If you are sent a gift with a value of £40* or less, which complies with the rules shown in paragraph 2.4, it will be free from customs duty and import VAT. Gifts of alcohol, tobacco, perfumes and toilet waters are subject to the limits shown in paragraph 2.5, while gifts of perfumes and toilet waters are subject to the limits in paragraph 2.6.*Please note this limit will reduce to £36 with effect from 1 January 2013.
Customs duty becomes payable if the value of the goods is over £135 but duty is waived if the amount of duty calculated is less than £9.
In summary:

Goods Value*

Customs Charges applicable

£0.01 to £15

No customs duty
No Import VAT**
£15.01 to £135

No customs duty
Import VAT due
£135.01 and greater

Customs duty due, but waived if the amount calculated due is less than £9
Import VAT due

Yeah, you do. I have to mark mine at $14 now.

Well today I got a parcel outside my door from the states, with a Customs Charge of £27.47 - yet it was at my door to take inside my house.

What's that all about :?: :?: :?: :?:

Did I get lucky somehow?

Yea you got lucky, must have been missed by whoever delivered it.

I got clobbered on a Jann Tosh rifle I bought from the states. Item was $25 plus $10 shipping, got £11 custom charge.

Nope, mine didn't and stated it against the law in the states to mark stuff as gift and you can get in big trouble if caught doing it. Not sure how true that is but it meant I got stung big.

He's correct Chris it is classed as mail fraud and is a problem at the moment.

That's why you send stuff to Todd as the Feds are scared of him and he's untouchable :D

Well if this happens to me, I will say I simply never received the parcel, as I never signed for it and it was just left at my door. I'm not paying for their mistake.

Mmmmmm, just bought a graded LL b wing pilot from ebay and it cost $130 plus $16 postage

How much is that gonna sting me when it arrives ??

Lol and then take it one step up and say its their fault and not only should your charges be waived, but say that they also should refund you the amount off the lost parcel.

I think that is how most other courier firms work. Unlike Royal Mail who hold your parcel until the fee is paid, they post it to you and then send you an invoice through the post for the charge.

You'll likely get a bill through the post asking for the money. I get a couple of those a month. I now wait till they send a request via a solicitor threatening court action. That way i know they've spent more money than i owe them. Then i pay. ;)

They can't prove I ever got the parcel though, so not sure if they have a strong case to claim the charges if I ever get a bill
