My apologies as i'm sure this has been asked many times over, but i was wondering if anyone could recommend a good collectibles insurance company? or can i just list it on the contents insurance?

Any help would be much appreciated.

I'd ring your current insurers and ask. Mine covers any single Item valued at under £1k iirc, but they are all different.

Better safe than sorry with something like this.

I think we're with Swift cover. They value single items up to something like 2k. I asked about my collection and they said it would be covered under the standard insurance. Personally I find that hard to believe. The person I spoke with said I could take out a specific policy for the collection but swift won't do that.

With these types of policies the only real way to prove what you have is to document every item and take lots of photos. I just can't see them paying out unless it's well documented. I could say there were ten VCJs in my collection ....that is plausible as it's all in the attic

If your going to use your home insurers you have to be careful with some stuff. If you insure your total contents for say £50k, and you get flooded, the loss adjuster will come round. If the stuff that is damaged is worth £20K but they can argue that the total value of your contents is say £100k they will then argue that you only had 50% insurance. Therefore although your £20k claim is less than the £50k your insurance says you have, they will only pay 50%, i.e. £10k of the claim. Its quite important to make sure your total insurance covers the contents of your house.

Thanks for the advice, I shall give my insurance a bell tomorrow and see what they advise. I think documenting my collection is a good idea as I currently have no real proof of anything I own

Cheers.

Its always worth doing a brief inventory of your whole house. It doesn't take that long and you would be amazed at how much it adds up to. Photos are a good idea for collectables.

As an aside, I took advice from a jeweller for the Mrs engagement ring. I got it from a small jewellers in the lanes in Brighton, as I live in Hove. I was going to put it on the home contents. They advised me to have a look at what they paid. Turns out if it got lost or stolen then I would have got vouchers to the value of the ring that I could only use at a couple of high street jewellers. No way would I have got the same ring from Goldsmiths for the cash price I got a certified diamond for from the independent. I got a policy with T H March that insures the ring for a guaranteed value. I just have to get it valued every couple of years and set the value at that.

Slippery old lot, insurance companies.

Wankers mate. Hate shopping around for insurance. Always get the feeling i'm being royally bummed.

Last year one of the kids soaked the bathroom floor while having a shower - the water was spaying out all over the place which finished off the bathroom floor and went through the kitchen roof  Our excess is £150 for accidental stuff so we though sod it, get a new kitchen roof out of it. However, the insurer argued that it wasn't accidental, it was a water leak. ****ing bollocks! They offered us £600, which would have more than covered the work probably twice over. Only thing for a 'water leak' the excess is £300! Ended up just replacing the laminate floor myself. Roof can wait until we do the kitchen as it's not that bad.

..oh yeh, but after that the cheeky bastards said i had made a claim and put up my renewal. Errr no! :x Sorted now like :)

Called up my contents insurers today and after explaining what i wanted to add i was patched through to a 'specialist' department and the first question they asked was how much was the jewellery worth! After being passed around to another couple people, I finally spoke to a very helpful chap and was able to add the collection. It's been individually listed as 'vintage Star Wars collection' and all for the bargain price of £24. I can't believe I hadn't done it sooner. This weekend I'll be sure to document it all.

Thanks for all the help and advice.

How's that work, does it cover to a certain value or did you have to tell them all the items you have and how much you paid for them?

Was just thinking say you were to get a few more items over the next few weeks they wouldn't be covered would they?

I insured my collection for what I believe it's currently worth, if I was to add to it over the next few months I would inform the insurers and have the value increased (luckily I'm having a collecting break!)

Within the policy individual pieces are insured, so if I was to have one piece stolen or the lot I could claim for the value of the theft. The policy also covered accidental damage.

As I said in my last post I'm going to document my collection, including estimated costs to replace pieces, along with photographic edvidence.

To be honest I was surprised how easy it was to set up, not as many questions as I imagined, but I'll be sure to read the small print when the policy comes through the post in the next few days. No doubt there's some catch!

Ok thanks for the info, thinking about it I should do the same. Got quite a few statues and busts that I haven't got documented and now with all the star wars stuff well that's the weekend sorted

Yep no doubt some sort of catch, we gotta pay for their bonuses some how aint we?

It was with direct line mate. As far as the excess is concerned i'm not sure to be honest, I'll have to check when the policy comes through. My excess for my contents insurence currently is £150 so i'll be guessing it'll be the same.
