Clarkson suspended from Top Gear

I dare say that's the end of Top Gear as we know it then. There are enough people out for him that he's not coming back from whatever it is he has done now.

Probably in the minority here but I can't stand him. Lives 10 miles from me as well. Seen him twice once getting out of his Range Rover and another time in Sainsbury's in Chipping Norton.

I've got to agree that the guy's a tool, regardless of whether or not he's like his on-screen persona in real life. I just don't see how his behaviour is 'funny' or 'ironic' or 'solely to wind-up the PC brigade'. I just find his jingoism sad and pathetic. Perhaps they should rebrand 'Top Gear' as a constructed-reality show.

I remember having a conversation in the local with some people who all thought Clarkson was great. They couldn't understand why I hated him and genuinely thought I was just playing devil's advocate!

APPARENTLY, after a day shooting that over ran they got back to the hotel, hit the bar for a few pints/glasses of wine and then when they were finished he realised the chef had gone home and the only food on offer was a cheese/cold meat (delete depending on your paper of choice) platter, at which point he got pissed off and decided chinning the producer was the way to go. Seems a bit strange, why chin the producer rather than the hotel manager, not like the producer forced him to drink a few pints first.

I genuinely think he's funny, that doesn't mean I think he's a great bloke, I wouln't want to hang out with Borat or David Brent either (who despite what he claims his 'character' in the office is just him.)

Love him or hate him, he's not going away. Even if the BBC sack him, Sky are apparently very keen to have him. Can't say I actually like the man, but he does make me laugh.

For years I couldn't make my mind up about him. I found some of his reporting very funny but there was something about him that didn't sit right with me.

I came to the conclusion 2 years ago that he is a complete dick. A spoilt bastard who is just a bit too comfortable with his own stardom.

Seriously, Top gear of late is a joke, 3 middle aged kids acting the **** doing things that are to be honest embarrassing now. A few years back it was great, good chemistry between the presenters, some great cars and it was interesting. Now it's just a bit jaded and stupid.

There's something very, very sad about watching JC sliding a £400K supercar round that track.

Time to shake it up I say.

Cars don't really interest me that much, however top gear is rather watchable. with most things bbc, there's little need to keep the big names. Can they get rid of clarkson, norton and all the rest of those dullards. Add winkelman to list...

I'd have Katherine Jenkins and Elisha Cuthbert presenting top gear...

Jonathan Ross got booted off the beeb and was just as big when ITV nabbed him.. JC wont be out of a job long...even Hamster and May's contracts are up soon, so chances of them being on another channel is high.

Always liked top gear but it did end being more about them than cars..and even the cars they did review were ones most of us can only dream of owning.

If they do all jump ship, then hopefully the program will be aimed more at affordable cars...and not ones for overpaid footballers.

I can't believe that hundreds of thousands of people signed an online petition to let him keep his job. He verbally abused (potentially racially) somebody for half an hour before physically attacking him and sending him to the hospital. If this occurred in your workplace would you want that violent thug fired?
Even the statement sent out by the director general is ridiculous. Saying that he really regrets loosing Clarkson, wants to thank him for his talent and contribution to the BBC. He just beat somebody up! Get rid of him!
And now the poor producer who was attacked is getting sent threats from people who blame him!
Clarkson will carry on through, rumour is that Netflicks really want him and the rest of the Top Gear presenters and that the BBC wants Chris Evans to replace Clarkson as presenter on Top Gear. Who in the world wants more of Chris Evans?

I agree, once you punch some one you have to go. Simple as.
I just think it's a shame as I liked Top Gear as a show. It had been going downhill for a few years but it's still about the ONLY thing on BBC I watch. I never liked reality TV, and any programme with "celebrity" in the title is an instant turn off. I've no interest in watching people cook, dance, (try to) sing etc. and as a heterosexual male, I have even less interest in period dramas. That leaves Top Gear.

BBC wants Chris Evans to replace Clarkson as presenter on Top Gear. Who in the world wants more of Chris Evans?

Sums it up very well. I can see the new Top Gear being as popular as a sex tape featuring Susan Boyle! (Easy Todd, it doesn't actually exist, I hope!)

I was hoping they'd really shake it up and start from scratch, Evans is too close to the bunch before him, bit knobby, too much money and too big an opinion/ego.

I reckon a good mix of presenters and weekly segments would be:
- Guy Martin; possibly covering vintage motoring and maybe a series long restoration job.
- Jodie Kidd (if they can get her off Channel5); covering motor sport in general; something missing in motorsport coverage generally as F1 gets all the coverage IMO.
- Steve Coogan; covering all other motoring aspects including actual reviews!

They'd make a good bunch for the Top Gear specials and they'd still be funny but eminently less stupid!


Who would everyone else choose and how would you rework the brand?

Part of the attraction of TG was the interaction between the hosts, they were pretty much three boys/mates pissing about. I'm not sure that would work if you add in a female presenter. I don't mean that in a sexist way, just that we all know we say certain things to our mates that we wouldn't say (or would tone down) in female company. Either way it will take time for the new host(s) to get used to each other. I suspect a lot of people will boycott the new TG in protest at Clarkson getting booted out, or simply cos they know it will never be as good. Actually, probably quite similar to how we feel about the prequels

Yeah, Jodie Kidd manages to be super annoying and incredibly boring all at the same time. Probably why you only actually see her on tv, what, three times a decade. :roll:
