Yesterday I was helping the Mrs tidy up the young kid's bedroom in time for Christmas. He's into Star Wars and plays with toy cars and all the usual stuff kids have these days. But it's got out of hand with crap people have bought him so we were having a clearout.

Sorting through tubs of broken robots, cars and little gadgety things got me thinking a few things -

1. Is this what my parents did, and is this where all my toys disappeared to (the wrong end of a bin bag)?

2. Am I chucking away future collectibles?

3. How **** are kids toys these days. Did my parents think that? Surely not

This whole tidying thing was actually strangely satisfying. To me tidying out all the crap makes way for cool toys that I ....I mean, the kid, loves :? This attitude did make me feel like some kind of toy Nazi though, but what the hell - I know cool toys when I see 'em! 8)

As toy collectors how do we feel about throwing modern toys away? Where you ever asked as a kid if you wanted to keep stuff and decided you didn't and now it turns out you chucked away a few grands worth of Star Wars vintageness? :x

You just reminded me that my little sister stuck all my Garbage Pail stickers on the back of her bedroom door while I was at school! :x

My mum did not need to throw them away as she rendered most of them harmless, by vacuuming all my bloody weapons & accessories up, seemingly daily :|

But I hear you, we have to clear out my lads stuff now & then as he is so heavy handed & is a terrible hoarder, no idea where he gets that from though

& Toy Nazi -

My parents only threw away toys that were broken...this is why I still have all my childhood star wars toys and my brother has none of his M.A.S.K toys.
When/if I have kids this woulsld be the approach I would take

My Mum was awesome with Star Wars stuff, I remember coming home from school once and she had been though the box and fixed loads of broken heads using heated wire and pushing it into the plastic. God knows where she got that idea from but money was tight and fixing was cheaper than buying.

It was the wicked step mother in years to come who gave it all away

We clear out toys a lot at home, but only the crap gets chucked out. Some good stuff goes on the bay, some boxed stuff gets kept. Space is limited at our place so who knows how I manage to stuff it all away somewhere.

We have just had a clear out to make space for the inevitable Christmas deluge, two boxes of broken matchbox, cars Mcdonalds toys and crap gone to the dump. I think I need to be more of a Nazi

Frank just puts them all in clear baggies with Made in Hong Kong on the outside and adds them to the stack!

Can't remember we what happened to all my stuff, however, I'm an old codger, so we are talking pre Star Wars such as evil k stunt bike, space 1999, capt Scarlett etc.

My son we have kept some of the loose figs from his childhood and I still have them here, Vader, Luke FB and a couple of others, and have added to them since joining the forum.

We always around mid Nov have a clear out which we did again this year and take our stuff to various charity shops, as then that doesn't feel a waste. Any toys we had in the past, we gave to local children's homes.

About 5 years ago there was a great toy offer in tesco BOGOF so did some early Crimble shopping for nephew etc an doubled up on everything then gave all of the new to local guy who runs the local PO and raises money for the local Hospice...that felt good.

There is always a good home for old toys :D

I do that! Our youngest has managed to pull a hand off a modern stormtrooper and also the arms from General Grievous. Heated up pins and shoved them inside the arms then pushed on the broken limb. Kind of works but doesn't stand up to the punishment kids dish out. Modern figures aren't half as tough as vintage.

Most of the things we binned yesterday were completely knackered. My conscience is relatively clear :)

Where did you get this idea from, I have always wondered where she learn't it?

Maybe I should just ask her

It just seemed practical :) There must be a better way. The problem is the pin is smooth so there's nothing for the plastic to key into.

I have issues, my initial reaction to that was "god, hope she kept them all in straight lines!"

If you've seen my limelight you'll know how my Mum persuaded me not to throw away my figures and cardbacks in the late eighties. But what did make it to the tip still makes me sick, I vividly remember one bin bag containing: X wing, Tie fighter, Darth's Tie, Landspeeder, troop transporter, Falcon, Snowspeeder, Cloud car and a smashed up At-At.
I remember feeling very grown up when I chucked it away.

Ouch! I feel your pain man :(

The thing is I don't remember ever being asked if I wanted this or that anymore. Things just vanished. I can vouch for a load of my belongings though - Around 1987 my mum split up with her husband of the time and everything got left behind. ****ing everything! There were loads of He-Man toys - Castle Greyskull, Battlecat. Some cool comics and sticker albums - Panini Mexico 86, ROTJ sticker album. A vintage Batmobile :x

This doesn't account for everything at my dad's place though :? Bastird must have binned the lot!

Glad other people had this problem... I still have all my old wars toys in my garage but I do remember I found the ewok catapult and energiser maintenance boxed... I looked for them one day and asked my mum who said they were just boxes and had chucked them... Now I know no great value but I'm always horrified at the thought!
