Ah Pete, you forgot the best thing about moon - Sam Rockwell, that guys is great in everything.
As this has drifted off the Boba Fett announcement and has become more of a bash modern blockbusters sort of thing I'm going to try and make a defence for the modern blockbuster, with the caveat that not all blockbusters are good, Transformers anyone... no plot, couldn't even follow the characters on screen it was so messy.
For the most part the big budget films are no more that candy floss, big, fluffy, and fun but too watch but they will rot your brain if you have too much, but that's OK. Don't forget that in 1977 Star Wars was the big budget candy floss movie of its time. Yes the model making is exquisite and the cinematography looks as good today as almost anything else but let's be honest, Plot, Writing, Directing, Acting... come on. The dialogue is stilted at best and some of the acting is very stiff and Lucas was not exactly a visionary director with his use of the camera, don't get me wrong i love it but to say it is any better than the Avengers in terms of Plot, Script and Acting etc. is a little rose tinted.
Like Edd I do prefer a 'real' stunt and backdrop to a CGI one, it is one of the worst things about the prequel films and as mentioned the fourth Indy film, but CGI has its place, anyone watch Avatar, Forest Gump, the Terminator films, what about Jurassic Park? All of which were done by ILM using technology developed for the Star Wars films, ok some are more than 10 years old now but the point is the same. Pixar studios (a sell off from ILM anyway)? Look at the work done on the Planet of the Apes reboot and the creation of Gollum?
Does anyone really want to say what Peter Jackson has done for the Blockbuster movie is rubbish? LoTR's did use CIG, the construct for the Orc Army Programme is a work of art (watch the extras on the disc to see how they did it, it will blow your mind) but also he built a lot of Middle Earth full scale and those films are fantastic and yes I would say 'Great' likewise with the Hobbit films (I'll conveniently forget King Kong).
Let's also not forget that it is the big budget movie that allows studios to safeguard revenue streams that allow them to make smaller films. Look at Warner Bros over the last 18 months or so they have made a good mixture of 'Blockbuster' films and more 'Serious' films:
Argo, The Hobbit, Burt Wonderstone, Gatsby, Prisoners, Gravity.
Ok Burt Wonderstone is a bit left of field but I loved it. As for the others there is a real mix of gritty storytelling, innovative use of technology and entertainment and I guarantee without the money coming in from the Hobbit they might not have been able to fund films like Prisoners and Gravity
I don't think I can weigh in on the 'what has been a great film' in the last 10-15 years as it is so subjective, but generally I think Pete's comment about staying away from Si-Fi mostly stands, moon aside that is a great film and LoTR's and Maybe District 9, that was surprising but if you look at more broadly there has been some great stuff:
The Dark Knight (come on it is), Memento, Pan's Labyrinth, Slumdog, Zodiac, Brave (Best animated film ever ), Good Night good Luck, No Country for Old Men etc. etc.
For me we are in a golden age of cinema right now, I can watch my big dumn blockbuster (Anything Marvel) followed by some outstanding animation (Frozen, Brave, Tangled, How To Train Your Dragon) and then round it off with something quirky or different (the Way Way Back or Darjeeling limited).
There really is something for everyone right now if you look hard enough…
Sorry, slow day at work
