Looks like the cashing in has begun already...

Must say I'm not looking forward to any of the new films. Let an old dog lie.

They did pay a lot for the rights, i expect them to milk the franchise for everything they can get, a standalone fett film sounds interesting, i'd be more interested in seeing vader between sith and a new hope mopping up the remaining jedi
Personally i love the idea of more films, i just hope they are good, disney have done well with marvel so far, i hope for the same quality for these new films

I think I'm just a grumpy old man that doesn't like modern films  I can't think of a film I've seen in the last decade that I've liked - Prometheus, Iron Man, The Avengers, etc etc, all absolute tosh IMO. I just hate CGI and the crappy acting/over-complicated story lines you get these days. Even if the new SW films have the original cast in them, I have no doubt they will be the same as all the modern crap. I guess I'm resigned to a life of only watching <2000 films.

don't get me started on prometheous, that film should have been brilliant and just wasn't, i was sat in the pictures telling myself its going to get good in a minute but nooo!
these kids and there pesky cgi shenanagins! i feel the same about some movies, theres so much going on the screen its hard to keep track sometimes, the transformer movies are guilty of that

Got to admit, Iron man Prometheus etc are a let down ...watched Man Of Steel the other day...not impressed at all

And with using descriptive terminology such as Tosh, means I think I'm a grumpy old man as well Edd  ( havnt heard Tosh for Donkeys :D )

Having said that, LOTR really liked, and the first Hobbit film was good.

I also watched class of 92 the other night ....now that was best thing I've seen for years ( but doesn't count)....... And here we go....form an orderly queue

I do think a Boba Fett film has the potential for being a cracker though...time will tell

I generally hate modern ****. These days most things are sort of here one minute, gone the next  Strangely though, I do seem to be embracing these new movies :) Really looking forward to them. News of a Fett flick is exciting. My only reservation would be if TV specials started being made.

I been waiting for this although if it had been made in the 80s would have been more welcome instead of all the CGI crap we can expect

honestly i'd be surprised if they didn't come up with more tv shows, but hopefully not holiday special quality, sheesh thats bad

I want to see a gritty GoT style SW series with kick ass violent Bounty Hunters.

Really looking forward to the Fett movie as long as they don't make him a ***** like in ROTJ. He's bad ass and should be shone as such.

That's the problem though - everyone is 'bad ass' these days. In the last Indy film Harrisson Ford was doing back flips and spin kicks at 70, and I watched Kick Ass 2 last week which is supposed to be a comedy but is more violent than Kill Bill! Bring back the good old days of 'proper' heroes and hard men like Clint Eastwood or Christopher Reeve that left something to the imagination. Not the modern CGI 'pussies' that look like Cheryl Cole with the moves of Bruce Lee. Absolute unbelievable bullshit.

I see Boba more as a hidden threat. Not like a Rambo where he takes on the whole of Asia with a chopstick - more sinister. In the shadows. A real fearful bad ass whose stories leave a lot to the imagination.

Films for young people i agree. There are plenty of great films that have come out in the last 6 or 7 years but non of them are action films or sic-fi or fantasy or whatever. All the super-hero films (about a dozen a year) perfectly show everything that is wrong with blockbuster movies these days. They're way too heavy handed. No story, paper thin, boring characters, no pacing, too much CGI, over emphasis on "action" (show me the "action" in E.T ??) and a script rustled up in post production long after shooting started. Unfortunately that is never going to change. It's too big a business. Iron Man 3 is one of the biggest grossing movies of all time. And it's utter ****. Not a single thing good about it on any level. And yet…
As long as people lap up this toilet water the studios are going to keep insisting on the same formulae and employing directors that are willing to obediently do their bidding and NEVER colour in outside the lines.

I have seen a couple of sci-fis that are great over the last few years but there's a very specific reason they don't suck…

Gravity: which came out last year, while technically a sic-fi, it wasn't aimed at kids…. so it was good! Slow paced, gripping, tense, exciting. It's simply one of the best films i've ever seen.

Moon: this is a work of genius. If you've not watched this yet insist on letting Iron Man **** directly into your eyes every ****ing year then you really need a word with yourself. This was a) not aimed at kids (so director actually allowed to tell a story) and b) didn't have a big budget so all effects were done by making models and sets (making what and what now?? )

Other areas of cinema are still good. Where the emphasis is still on story, drama and character.

Sums up my feelings pretty well

Ah Pete, you forgot the best thing about moon - Sam Rockwell, that guys is great in everything.

As this has drifted off the Boba Fett announcement and has become more of a bash modern blockbusters sort of thing I'm going to try and make a defence for the modern blockbuster, with the caveat that not all blockbusters are good, Transformers anyone... no plot, couldn't even follow the characters on screen it was so messy.

For the most part the big budget films are no more that candy floss, big, fluffy, and fun but too watch but they will rot your brain if you have too much, but that's OK. Don't forget that in 1977 Star Wars was the big budget candy floss movie of its time. Yes the model making is exquisite and the cinematography looks as good today as almost anything else but let's be honest, Plot, Writing, Directing, Acting... come on. The dialogue is stilted at best and some of the acting is very stiff and Lucas was not exactly a visionary director with his use of the camera, don't get me wrong i love it but to say it is any better than the Avengers in terms of Plot, Script and Acting etc. is a little rose tinted.

Like Edd I do prefer a 'real' stunt and backdrop to a CGI one, it is one of the worst things about the prequel films and as mentioned the fourth Indy film, but CGI has its place, anyone watch Avatar, Forest Gump, the Terminator films, what about Jurassic Park? All of which were done by ILM using technology developed for the Star Wars films, ok some are more than 10 years old now but the point is the same. Pixar studios (a sell off from ILM anyway)? Look at the work done on the Planet of the Apes reboot and the creation of Gollum?

Does anyone really want to say what Peter Jackson has done for the Blockbuster movie is rubbish? LoTR's did use CIG, the construct for the Orc Army Programme is a work of art (watch the extras on the disc to see how they did it, it will blow your mind) but also he built a lot of Middle Earth full scale and those films are fantastic and yes I would say 'Great' likewise with the Hobbit films (I'll conveniently forget King Kong).

Let's also not forget that it is the big budget movie that allows studios to safeguard revenue streams that allow them to make smaller films. Look at Warner Bros over the last 18 months or so they have made a good mixture of 'Blockbuster' films and more 'Serious' films:
Argo, The Hobbit, Burt Wonderstone, Gatsby, Prisoners, Gravity.

Ok Burt Wonderstone is a bit left of field but I loved it. As for the others there is a real mix of gritty storytelling, innovative use of technology and entertainment and I guarantee without the money coming in from the Hobbit they might not have been able to fund films like Prisoners and Gravity
I don't think I can weigh in on the 'what has been a great film' in the last 10-15 years as it is so subjective, but generally I think Pete's comment about staying away from Si-Fi mostly stands, moon aside that is a great film and LoTR's and Maybe District 9, that was surprising but if you look at more broadly there has been some great stuff:
The Dark Knight (come on it is), Memento, Pan's Labyrinth, Slumdog, Zodiac, Brave (Best animated film ever ), Good Night good Luck, No Country for Old Men etc. etc.

For me we are in a golden age of cinema right now, I can watch my big dumn blockbuster (Anything Marvel) followed by some outstanding animation (Frozen, Brave, Tangled, How To Train Your Dragon) and then round it off with something quirky or different (the Way Way Back or Darjeeling limited).
There really is something for everyone right now if you look hard enough…

Sorry, slow day at work :)
