Basically Christianity grew out of Judaism.
Jew were waiting for a messiah (chosen one) to lead them. When Jesus was born some thought it was him. When He started teaching in Jerusalem his main followers were all Jews who believed he was the Messiah. Most Jews didn't believe it was him.
That's the beginning of the split in Judaism that lead to the Development of a whole new religion based on the Teachings of Jesus.
They believed jesus came to replace and update many of the old Jewish laws and customs, but essentially at the beginning the core beliefs were Jewish; One God, all the prophets, the 10 commandments and their holy book was the same as the jews.
Eventually more and more non-Jews joined this new movement and it became less and less Jewish. Many of the Jewish festivals/traditions were forgotten and new ones based on the life and death of jesus replaced them, hence christians celebrate Christmas and easter JEws don't. The holy book was retained, but was added to with the teachings of Jesus and his followers, known as the new testament. The Jewish section was referred to as the old testament.
Jews still believe the messiah is yet to come. Christians believe he's been, but will will return at the end of time.
