Basically Christianity grew out of Judaism.

Jew were waiting for a messiah (chosen one) to lead them. When Jesus was born some thought it was him. When He started teaching in Jerusalem his main followers were all Jews who believed he was the Messiah. Most Jews didn't believe it was him.

That's the beginning of the split in Judaism that lead to the Development of a whole new religion based on the Teachings of Jesus.

They believed jesus came to replace and update many of the old Jewish laws and customs, but essentially at the beginning the core beliefs were Jewish; One God, all the prophets, the 10 commandments and their holy book was the same as the jews.

Eventually more and more non-Jews joined this new movement and it became less and less Jewish. Many of the Jewish festivals/traditions were forgotten and new ones based on the life and death of jesus replaced them, hence christians celebrate Christmas and easter JEws don't. The holy book was retained, but was added to with the teachings of Jesus and his followers, known as the new testament. The Jewish section was referred to as the old testament.

Jews still believe the messiah is yet to come. Christians believe he's been, but will will return at the end of time.

So the three hour discussion/lecture I got from/had with the Muslim bloke I lived with ('lived with' but not in that way Han, don't get excited), who told me Jesus and Mohammed were the same person......................was a load of bollocks?
Shows you what I know, I stand corrected!

You covered all religions in your time Gary? I'm guessing you've done Budhism, Hinduism and Sikhism (if that's a word). What about Shinto and the smaller less mainstream religions Voodoo and the Pagan (for want of a better word) ones?

Basically, yes, it was all bollocks. I don't know what the **** he was on about mate, but he couldn't be more wrong, and actually what he said could be classed as heresy in Islam.

I've covered the 'main' six represented in this country

Christianity
Islam
Judaism
Buddhism
Sikhism
Hinduism

But I only relly know in any great detail about Islam and Christianity, and that is mostly what I teach, plus At A level i also teach philosophical ethics :D

This has to be the most boring topic in the history of the forum !!

I thought the first post might have been one of Jabba's April Fools joke but he posted it on the 3rd !! :x

I think religion is fascinating, I dont believe a word of it but find it very interesting, and you cant class it as bollocks or boring when so many people on the planet live their lives by it.

I love studying and teaching about religion.

Even people who aren't religious tend to find it interesting. If i'm at a party or get together and people find out I teach Religion they instantly start a conversation about religion. Some have even started confessing to me...which was funny. If a little weird.

If you're interested Jabba, read the Bible. There are some great stories in it. Especially in the book of Genesis and exodus. Leviticus and numbers deuteronomy got a bit boring at times, but after that is pretty good.

I'd recommend reading the Good news version.

those dirty Sodomites!

it was all fun and games until Loki was sent to have a word!

I love how they decided that Lot was righteous enough to be allowed to leave the city before it was destroyed and then as soon as his wife was turned to salt he started feeling up his own daughter!

I think they did, I saw a programme about it all on National Geographic when they were looking for Sodom and Gomorrah!

Lot's daughters incorrectly believed they were the only people to have survived the devastation. They assumed it was their responsibility to bear children and enable the continuation of the human race

dirty little bitches!

Some classic bible deaths

Including those that put bombs in their shoes....

But religion is only partly to blame for that.

Logically, if it were fully to blame, then every religious person would be doing it.

Yeah, I'm exactly the same.
Each to their own, but I can't believe in it myself.
