In light of the recent Vectis auction in which the Palitoy figures seem to be getting more and more collectible I thought it might be a good time to see who owns the best Palitoy figure collections out there, focussing on MOC's.

I am a keen Palitoy collector but like many am just missing the 12 back Chewbacca and a 20 back Power Droid and realise that to acquire these would have to be very lucky or buy a set when one becomes available, I've started acquiring one or two Palitoy 30 backs but they seem even rarer, so if anyone is wanting to sell their complete set just let me know!!!

Thought the topic would be a good point for a discussion, could extend it to factory sealed vehicles etc.

I have the majority of my 12 backs graded by AFA, some by UKG and my 20 backs are all graded to but as collectors know it is a costly game getting hold of those lovely Palitoys!!!

Cheers Jimmy

Hi, yes I have a complete set of Palitoy 12 and 20 backs all graded to AFA 85, including the large head han, think my Chewbacca is my favourite, it's on an 'A' card and has triple 85 grades.

I have recently acquired some factory sealed Palitoy die cast vehicles as well, apparently quite rare.

I currently have a factory sealed Palitoy Luke 3 position laser rifle at UKG, never seen one factory sealed before so thought it had to be protected in a proper case!!!

By the way Jason , it's Horsley!!!

Pretty sure Gary has the most complete Palitoy MOC collection out there with all his incredible runs etc 8)
There r some smaller awesome Palitoy MOC collections out there, v few with extremely rare 30 backs in them ie SW 12&20 back figures

Richard Horsley's 12&20 back AFA graded set along with one other top grade AFA set that has the VCJ is the grandest I have seen all being AFA 85 and better

Many collectors like to remain private so I won't mention any other names for now, obviously Richard's name has already been mentioned and Gary has blown us all away with pics of his collection on here :)

Up until early last year I had a top condition set of 12&20 backs MOC including the large head Han, some of which went into Richards collection including the Chewy. They do look so much more awesome now graded 8)

Cheers mate,

I'm just glad I kept hold of the sets, as you know I've added a Palitoy Empire Luke Fatigues to my set so if any other Empire cards come up may be tempted but for me is completing a set of Palitoy 30 backs realistic, the reason I bought the Luke was that I'd never seen one on Ebay before!!!

Another goal would be to complete a run of 12 backs on an 'A' card, not sure if it can be done but a DSG 'A' card was sold on ebay, one thing is for sure with this hobby/business is that you never know what is around the corner, that for me makes it great!!!

That Chewbacca is a pricey one for sure but the power droid that sold at vectis this week went for a fair price. That said though it wasn't in top condition so I don't know if you're holding out for the best of the best to come along.

All the best with finishing putting them all together as it truly is a sight to behold once you have them as we've seen with other sets :D

The term 'best' is always a tricky one in collecting.

What categories do you base it on? Quantity? Quality? Completeness? Rarity? Desirability?

I have a load of Palitoy figures for sure. Well over 300 unique variations. Though more than many other Palitoy collectors I know of, I doubt that is the largest collection. I certain have no proof that it is, nor do I need it.

I may have 10 in a set compared to someone else who has only 6. But their's are mint and AFA 85+, and mine are worn, wtih damaged bubbles...which is better?

I have some very rare pieces. Yet I know other collectors who have far less than me, but have ones I do not have.

And of several collectors who have pieces I don't, does one have rarer ones than the other collector? If one has a SW character on an ESB card and another has a ESB character on a ROTJ card, is one better than the other? Especially if both are only known to exist as one example. I guess most would say the SW character on ESB (such as a 30 back) But surely that's more to do with desirability than rarity.

The way I see it, is that I have the best Palitoy collection I have been able to get. I've made some silly choices along the way but have learnt from them. I've missed out on some pieces which is annoying but it couldn't always be helped as I was in the wrong place at the wrong time or have just not had the money at that time (I was offered both a Palitoy VC Jawa for a lot less than what the Vectis one or the other private sale went for and several Trilogo Madines!)

I feel the same way about other people's collections. They have done the best they can to get what they have got. As long as they haven't done anything underhanded or screwed anyone over to get it then their collection is as good as anyones. And certainly with a number of us we have always helped each other out without question. So my collection was certainly not put together by me alone.

So whoever has every Palitoy MOC figure ever released on mint AFA 100 cards has th ebest collection beyond any doubt as they have made it in every possibly catergory I listed above. As to whether such a person exists is another matter! I just know it isn't me :D

Gary, fantastic post and you hit the nail on the head.I feel that same way too.We all have different disposable incomes and not matter how much or how little you spend, all that matters is how you want your collection to be.People can still get a buzz looking at a £1 item, than the way they get a buzz looking at a £10,000 item.It isnt a competition, and im glad that 99% of people in this hobby think like that.We all know there are a few ' im the boss' people around, but the way i look at is that if they complete then they are doing it for the wrong reasons. We all know a good bidding war is par for the course, and its good for the hobby to know the right people, who in turn return a good deed.

I commend you with that post-top notch IMO.

I really hope it is 99% of people who think non competitively, but I seem to run into more an more people who will screw you over just to get ahead in collecting.

Shame really as these are at the end of the day, childhood toys!

Top, top post Gary. I wholeheartedly agree. I would never classify my Palitoy collection as the best, but it gives me a buzz and I'm more than happy with it!

And ultimately, you being happy with it is the key thing. 8)

Collect for yourself, never for anyone else!!

Amen brother!

best ? if it was a level playing field on one figure on the same card and comparing them to each other then you could find one whats the best one , but people collections are not the same so its a imposable statement and will be so for ever .

whats best means nothing really ?

rarity or desirability ?

something can be so rare that only one in the world survived but if no one cares then is it of any interest to anyone.

at this time Palitoy cards are very desirable dose that make them rare or just hard to buy as there are more people that want them than there are figures to go around ?

also whats desirable now today may not be in 5 years time , i have been collecting for 30 year + now and i have seen things become desirable and go up and i have seen things become less desirable and go down so saying something it the the best collectable or that is the best collection is not posable.

personally i have worked hard lake many of you on here to collect the things i like , things that make me happy , things that i like to have around me and shear with people that are close to me and understand and care about these things and that is really all that matters .

please do not think i am showing off in any way but i have been very lucky in my time to have been able to buy some things i did not think i could buy in my time on this planet , i own over 300 original film props and costumes from the films and these are very desirable at this time but my Palitoy Stomtrooper is something that is more important to me personally that as screen used Darth Vader , many people will disagree as both these things mean different things to different people , the trooper was the first figure i had as a child and i remember getting it at the time so it means more to me that the Vader .

thats the fun thing about collecting each item is not the same in each of our minds and if you had something as a child its a link back to some of the best days of our life's when we were innocent before we know about the worries of life , so looking at a toy we once had or in some cases when we still have the toys we grew up with an old tatty R2 or something like that its the best thing in the world to that person :)

one last point and people do forget collecting should be fun :) and i also think toys should be accessible so you can touch them and feel them , i have been thinking a lot of recent times and sins getting back into this and i do have to say when reading on here everyone gets something new and you here some say they are going to grad it or send it off to be graded ? its a little odd for me still ?

the item is what it is and you like it for what it is why dose grading it make it better ?

putting it into a case i get that and i to have started to do that also as they do help to keep then safe but i do not seal them in i like to pop them out and touch them and get close to the card and really look around them as i did as a kid when i could not have them all i used to look through the clear bubble and study all the detail and work out what it all was and work out which one i wanted next and when that was likely to be , looking through that bubble its just the same as back then , putting it into a case and sealing it for event and having a barcoded number in the bottom corner dose nothing for me it a barrier to going back in time and being that kid again .

just some thoughts ?

and everyone is different when collecting so there is no right or wrong :)

but i have a palitoy large head han graded that i bought in like that next week i think i am going to open the case up and have a study of it real close up as a 7 year old would :)
