BBC 1's Fake Britain / Palitoy market

Sorry to go slightly off topic but IMO Toy Toni is not the one coming out of this looking badly, there are plenty of other people selling fakes/recards etc, he's just done the best job so far.

The real cuplrits here are the grading companies that have basically proven they are no better judges of authenticity than anybody else, which some of us knew years ago. Far too many people rely on them as some kind of celestial entity that can GUARANTEE something is authentic. The reality is they're some guys that put stickers on stuff. And the lack of apologies/remedies etc has not done them any favours.

Grading is the worst thing that ever happened to this hobby IMO - it was a much simpler and more honest marketplace when people had to use their common sense before buying something, and before the most valuable part was the number on a sticker.

Something needs to happen on the AFA/UKG front. My eBay palitoy search has a dozen graded Toni's which are not declared in the descriptions on the first page alone. What hope have new collectors got until the grading companies man up and take ownership of a mess they helped create.

Jason

Agreed that the response, or complete lack there of, from AFA and to a lesser extent UKG, has been pathetic.
Their silence is deafening.

I understand why, who would want to admit their business is a sham? But that doesn't make it right.

On the flip side there are a lot of people who own some expensive graded items (and have paid a high premium for the grade) that will be shitting themselves right now if AFA/UKG do take a beating as the value of these items will drop if the credibility of these companies is called into question

I just want to state that my comment wasnt aimed at Jason. It is just something that i personally think :)

Times are going to be changing much more in the future...

Did the BBC go into the AFA grading scandal?

I spoke about AFA/UKG in one recorded section. Just reiterates what I've been saying the last few months. AFA/UKG should work together to give a unified way of dealing with these. They should be marked in their online lookup databases. They should offer free regrading as Q-grade or similar for ones they have graded and grade new examples like
that going forwards.

Additionally, I would like to see transparency from both AFA/UKG. They should make exact numbers and serial grades of the Tonis they have graded known in
an easy accessible list. I would also like to seem them contributing what additional knowledge they have in terms of identifying Tonis to the community, so that
the information can be freely shared on websites like my cardback guide etc.

cheers Jason

We had Fake Britain film at our auction on Thursday last week.

They brought along a graded C-3PO removable limbs, and they filmed Chris showing how to identify it as a Toni. The TV people thought they would have to smash it out of the case for us to look at it! We had a couple of other (proper) 65 backs in so he showed those off compared to the Toni.

They filmed a bit of the Star Wars toys being sold, and I might have been caught on camera doing the internet bidding.

I asked them if they had got hold of Toni, and they said he hasn't responded. Apparently they are arguing between themselves whether to just turn up on his doorstep or not, so still haven't decided. They also mentioned that they think this is worth more than a 10 minute slot on Fake Britain, and they may look into making a one hour show at some point.

Thanks for the update Kayleigh, good to see things are progressing on this. I think they are keen to get Toni on film too. Will be interesting to see if they try and make a 1 hour special on this. Presume the c-3p0 piece was pointing out the red dot and lack of clear plastic bag on chewies black sack?

Cheers Jason

Jason, yep, that was the main thing they discussed, and talking about some of the other 'tells' on the other cards like no crescent flaw and incorrect bubbles, etc.

I don't suppose anyone has a genuine Palitoy C-3PO removable limbs on a 65 back card that we could borrow for the show?! Chris is filming with them again on 27th August and they've asked us to try and get hold of a genuine one to compare to the Toni card they have. If anyone has a C-3PO who would like to be famous and help conquer Toni, even if he is a bit battered, please PM me, drop me an email at [email protected] or give me a call on 01384 250 220. We would obviously cover any costs of getting the item to us, and it would be insured while with us. We will also give you a £20 postage credit for next time you buy from us.

Thanks!

Are they going to highlight the fact eBay don't seem to give a damn they are the go-betweens for these fakes to make it onto the market?

Hoping so.

(sorry if this has been discussed earlier in the thread....there's a lot to search through) :D
