OK - so this crossed both Vintage and Modern, so I figured what the what and posted it in this thread...

So - since 2011 (after selling my collection) I've been working to get it back and complete my goal of collecting a 'complete' basic figure carded run from 1978 - 2005 - not counting repacks within the same line. Ambitious, yes, but confusing, because it turns out, its quite hard to work out exactly what a basic figure is and what counts, for example, sneak peak figures don't seem to count as basic line figures, and since POTF2 unique figures have been regularly packed with creatures and vehicles, and the cinema packs, and there have always been multi-figure packs etc. etc. but I think this is what there is:

Kenner (1978-1985) - 96 figures (I am not counting Ewoks/Droids - although maybe I should - ouch that would hurt the wallet...)
POTF2 - (1995-2000) - 88 figures
EP1 - (1999-2000) - 50 figures
POTJ - (2000 - 2002) - 57 figures
Saga Blue - (2002-2004) - 145 figures
Clone Wars - (2004 - 2005) - 25 figures
OTC - (2004-2005) 54 figures
ROTS - (2005) 68 figures

So I think there are 583 Basic figures (+15 if you include the Ewoks/Droids, which I don't because I can't afford them :) ).

Anyway interested to know what folks think - and FYI I am only 25 figures short of getting this done - assuming I haven't missed anything

That's a massive aspiration, but, as you're only 25 figures short…

I personally didn't focus on Droids and Ewoks when I was younger, but did get an opportunistic small number and an A-Wing. When I came back to collect during the pandemic (approx 18 years later) the first thing I did was to address the Droids and Ewoks gap (loose complete). The only loose complete figure I'm missing now from my vintage collection is Sise Fromm…. Which is irritating.

So my advice would be, especially as you're 25 away from completion, to bite the Droids and Ewoks bullet.

As you've discovered, it's actually quite tough to define what does or doesn't constitute a basic figure. At the end of the day, only you can really decide what you do and don't class as one. I would always recommend only collecting what you want to / what you like, and never doing so out of any feeling of obligation to complete a run.

To help you decide what does and doesn't count for you, I recommend these:

Good luck!

Hadn't used the rebel scum resource before - tar. numbers on eyeball counting match up (or very close).

My (self inflicted issue) is the Ewoks/Droids figures - Because the cartoons were so mainstream its hard not to count the MOC's as part of a basic line (although I don't really think they were) - it's a moot point given the prices and I want to finish off what I am focused on, but I know at some point I'll have to go after them... For now they are out.

OK - not that it matters, but having spent more hours than is probably good for me - I think the Basic figure count between 1978-2005 is actually 608. (using the rule that droids and ewoks don't count and that where a figure is repacked within the same line doesn't count - but if they are repackaged in a different line then that does count).
