Howdy, oh great, knowledgeable Forum members.

I've been acquiring cardbacks as a great method of gaining experience without damaging the future MOC budget. My ESB collection is going well, I'm learning lots, and enjoying every minute.

I didn't have much in the way of SW cardbacks, so won a batch from the states with a few 12 backs in there. But I'm a little suspicious of them. This might just be because I've not got much experience handling 12 backs. But the Leia 12C and Vader 12A seemed particularly odd. The Leia seems a little too glossy, and the Vader has no tearing from the bubble removal and no real bubble indentation on the back. I've read a similar post recently, and whilst I doubt any body would go to the trouble of faking cardbacks, they could be fake MOCs gone wrong. So opinions please.

I'll add that these came from ebay, but from a seller with positive feedback in the thousands and a 'no questions asked' 14 day return policy. So I doubt he's deliberately selling fakes, and I'm sure we'd work something out amicably. I'm just pleased to be learning this with cardbacks rather than MOCs

Cheers gang. I guess I'm just surprised at the variability in glossiness more than anything. Difficult to capture with a photo, but the 3rd pic / side by side is the best I could manage. It could easily just be a storage / ageing process, but they're both in great condition and I've not seen so much variabilty in ESB cards.

Gloss can vary on the cardbacks due to different productions runs, suppliers, etc. Most of the guys making these cardbacks use photopaper and crappy templates from over a decade ago. The photo paper will have the wrong gloss and the feel is a dead giveaway. Also If they try to do the "make it look like an old cardback" thing with tearing, the paper underneath will scream freshly torn white stock. Plus they are spray mounting the back and front to either white cardstock or brown and this was not the production process for the real ones, most are a dead giveaway when you look at the side edges of the cardback.

That man knows his stuff. I thought they looked funny too!
