Hello gents

I recently needed to buy a "cheap" runaround basically to drop my daughter back at her mums on a wednesday when my missus is working.

Anyway I found a "bargain" on ebay and decided to go have a look with a view to buying, the car looked good enough for it's age (vw golf 1999) and I decided after a little test to buy the ****er...

This is where my problems began,on the way home the exhaust started making a loud noise but I was aware it needed a new box for this so wasnt concerned...

I then went to insure the car and got promptly told it was a category D write off  ,I was able to insure the car and it didnt cost anymore money,I am just seriously pissed that the **** didnt inform me and to be honest dont have a clue what the term Cat D means?

I have been in touch with the seller since and there is a chance I can get a deal to get my dollar back, but I am not holding my breath...

Does anyone know anything about this or have had similar dealings?

For the record we are only talking £1000 but I am only a self employed landscaper and that cash could be used so much better lol!

Look forward to seeing what you guys know about this topic...

Stefan

Very dodgy mate, its been damaged and deemed unfit for the road, then repaired, you need to find out what the damage was exacty and who did the repairs.

Especially as you have your children in it, it may not be structrally sound if you had an accident.

I would get your money back.

I am going to try Plantman,I just have a feeling it may be a dead end mate...

I am going to seek legal advice tomorrow on this, you hit the nail on the head with regards to my kid being in the car,I normally use my van but have been hit with a huge tax bill for using it for last year so my thinking was to get a "cheap" car lol!

Cheers for the reply mate

No worries,

did you exchange a sales recipt, if he has sold you a cat D car he has to declare it, otherwise its fraud, you can report it to the police. Its as bad as stealing your money.

Take the advert and recipt/agreement if you have one.

Other way would be to drive it back to him and demand it back, explaining you aint driving your kids around in an unsafe car.

Good old Google ;)

Category A - Vehicle must be crushed. All of it.
Category B - Vehicle may not be returned to road. Parts may be sold.
Category C - Repairable. Possibly structural damage. Cost of damage (at main dealer prices and labour rates) is more than book value of vehicle.
Category D - Repairable. Probably non-structural damage. May have been economic to repair, but insurer doesn't want to.
Category F - Damaged by fire.
Category X - Repairable. Minor Damage.

Cat Ds are a nightmare to insure. If the seller failed to declare it then you are entitled to your money back as he has willingly mis-sold the car, there is no way he cannot of known it was a Cat D.

If he fails to give you your money back you can take to to small claims court.

Nice one gents

The police have been informed and am currently going through what could be a VERY long process,****ing thieving joker has now turned his phone off as well....

I am relieved to hear that I may be entitled to get something done about this, wont hold my breath as of yet though!

Cheers guys

I used to drive 3 wheelers for years & twice had someone bump me & the insurance Cat D the car & pay me out, both times it was easily repairable & nothing structural, so I would try & find out exactly what the problems were & how.where they were fixed as it may well still be a great car.

PS - should have bought the bloody Honda Civic I just sold as I posted up here for the guys, it was a great runner & only £300

Fingers crossed you get your cash back mate, sounds like he may be deserving of a turd in a box!

Sorry to hear that mate but in future NEVER buy a car, even a cheap one, without doing an HPI check! It only costs about £10 these days.

As far as I know a seller has no legal obligation to tell you that a car is a Cat D, you should have checked yourself. Cat D isn't that bad anyway, on a 10+ year olf Golf it might have been something silly like a dent in the door that would cost more than £1000 to fix at the dealer. As long as it's been fixed properly then there's absolutely nothing to worry about.

Bottom line - don't worry about it, and lesson learned for next time!

Edd you have hit the nail on the head there mate!

Just got the motor back from the garage and it needs jack **** done to it,just some rear shocks,a lense and a connector...the damage from the accident was a shunt up the rear, which I know all about  and has since been repaired...

I never buy cars this is the second one I have ever had,the last was an astra that I owned from new and has finally given up the ghost and didnt need this car apart from the fact that my company van cost me a ton in tax last year and being a thick **** I thought this was the easiest option...lesson learned for sure there!

Thank you for the advice gents, very much appreciated!
