Hi

We're looking at a family holiday and I was thinking about Tunisia where I know it's possible to go and visit some of the Mos Eisley sets from ANH. Has anyone ever been?

People have said that Tunisia is a ****-hole and some of the sets require days of treks out into the desert. Just wanted to know if it's worth doing, or should I not bother?

I've been. We were on the island of Djerba and did a 2-3 day jeep Safari to the edge of the Sahara staying in a 5 star tent complete with plumbed in on suite.

Only did a few of the star wars sites. The sidi driss hotel for the luke homestead interior and some of the episode 1 sets. Went to the town of Tatooine which was a bit of a dump to be honest. Was great driving through the desert with star wars playing on the iPod.

If I was going again I'd do a dessert trek via camel for a week. The dessert really was spectacular. Would also give the newly refurbed Lars homestead exterior a visit.

Have a great time if you go!

:)

How old are your kids? I've been to Morocco before I had kids and I wouldn't take my children their until at least teenagers. I no Morocco isn't Tunisia but then I know people who have been to both and say their not that different. Just my opinion though everyone has their own thoughts on these issues.

Fack.... How big was it? Was it jelly? Cos ice cream would melt, no?

I've been too we did two weeks safari and visited everything, the Star Wars sites were the best thing Tunisia had to offer I was surprised how uncommercialised it was you couldn't even buy a souvenir!
Really magical moment when we drove over the peak of a dune to look down on the mos eisly set.

But would I go again? No the place is dirty and we ended up with proper nasty food poisoning

Travelled to Tunisia back in 2004...feel old now! Did a train journey tour that took in the Star Wars sets. Was surreal to actually be there. We did an overnight stay in the Sahara. The scenery was spectacular. Did the whole camel trek etc...As someone else said, no real Star Wars souvenirs then, just locals selling handmade goods. Not sure what the set up is now 11 years on...Overall, enjoyed our stay there, yes it was a bit dirty in places but hey, it's an experience.
Not sure I'd rush back with kids now though?

Here I am in the set that was converted into a hotel

Thanks for the replies

Youngest kid is 8 and has a propensity to winge so maybe skip this trip.

Sounds expensive and not family friendly. Looks good on those photos.

Where else to go? Not a resort type person.

This is a good question as we always go away in the winter at some point and struggle to decide. Assuming you want some nice temperature's we usually choose South East Asia, Malaysia and Thailand work well for us. Last year we whent to Sr Lanka which worked really well. I know the flights are expensive, but when you get their the £ goes a long way. Canaries are an obvious choice but if you don't like resorts it can be tricky.

Couple years ago we whent to the south of Spain and had some perfect weather in January and evan ended up on the beach a couple of days.

Hope this helps. :D

It's funny you mention Asia. I only ever want to go to India. Spent a lot of time there since I was 18. Wife isn't keen. Had plans to go twice in the last 4 years that have fallen through. My experience of budget holidays in India is not family friendly ...not in the slightest

Spain sounds good. Went years back with my parents on a golfing trip. That was ok. Just sorted ourselves out in a villa. Anywhere anyone can recommend? Nice weather and nice scenery. Few beers but no idiotic piss pots.

Wife's brother lives near Alacantie which was nice, not to much of a tourist trap especially in January. But we did get lucky with the weather, if it had rained for 6 days while we were their would have been a bit boring.

If there's beer and something to read then that's a holiday to me. Kids will need entertaining though

Not arsed about Splashworld and all that type of ****, just need something to do.

Thailand was probably the best holiday I've ever had, so much too see
Lovely people and the best food. Oh and the snorkelling is amazing

Canaries is your best bet I reckon, not that I'm a travel agent or anything.

Just my opinion, hope you have a good holiday whatever you decide to do. 8)
